I'll close with this...see if your pride can get past it...Let it be observed that the paschal lamb, is called the passover, because it represented the destroying angel' s passing over the children of Israel, while he slew the firstborn of the Egyptians; and our Lord and His disciples call this lamb the passover, several times in this chapter; by which it is demonstrably evident, that they could mean no more than that the lamb sacrificed on this occasion was a memorial of, and represented, the means used for the preservation of the Israelites from the blast of the destroying angel. In the Hebrew, Chaldee, and Chaldeo-Syriac languages, as used in the Bible, there is no term which expresses to mean, signify, denote, though both the Greek and Latin abound with them: hence the Hebrews use a figure, and say, it is, for, it signifies. So Gen 41:26, Gen 41:27. The seven kine Are (i.e. represent) seven years. This Is (represents) the bread of affliction which our fathers ate in the land of Egypt. Dan 7:24. The ten horns Are (i.e. signify) ten kings. They drank of the spiritual Rock which followed them, and the Rock Was (represented) Christ. 1Co 10:4. And following this Hebrew idiom, though the work is written in Greek, we find in Rev 1:20, The seven stars Are (represent) the angels of the seven Churches: and the seven candlesticks Are (represent) the seven Churches. The same form of speech is used in a variety of places in the New Testament, where this sense must necessarily be given to the word. Mat 13:38, Mat 13:39. The field IS (represents) the world: the good seed Are (represent or signify) the children of the kingdom: the tares Are (signify) the children of the wicked one. The enemy Is (signifies) the devil: the harvest Is (represents) the end of the world: the reapers Are (i.e. signify) the angels. Luk 8:9. What might this parable Be? - What does this parable Signify? Joh 7:36. What is the Signification of this saying? Joh 10:6. They understood not what things they Were, what was the Signification of the things he had spoken to them. Gal 4:24. For these Are the two covenants, these Signify the two covenants. Luk 15:26. He asked, what these things Meant. Vincent Vega
In that case, how do you know what parts of the bible have implicit "signifies" and which don't? And in any case, it's moot. The Gospel of St. Matthew was written in Greek. If he wanted to plop in a "signifies", he would have. Also, enter is your friend (or return, if you swing that way). Archaeology cat
Louie, the disciples did believe Jesus spoke literally when He told them they must eat His flesh in John 6. Many questioned how this could be, we're disgusted, and walked away. Dd Jesus call them back or correct their misunderstanding as He did when He was misunderstood about being born again? Nope. He kept using stringer language reaffirming what He said until they left. And then when they left, instead of calling them back, He asked those who stayed if they were also leaving. Sounds like He meant it literally. It's shocking, and amazing all at once. I used to try arguing against Jesus being literal by bringing up the OT prohibition against consuming blood. When I finally looked at it completely, I was absolutely amazed. In the OT, they were forbidden to consume blood because it contained the life of the creature; Jesus then says if we don't consume His Blood, we will not have life. Wow! You can bet the Jews understood Him to be speaking literally then. The reactions of the non-Christians towards the early Christians confirms the early Christian belief in the Real Presence, for they were condemned as cannibals. Obviously their persecutors didn't quite understand, but heard enough to know it wasn't just a symbolic meal. God bless
Mark of the Cross
I don't explain it away...He took the bread...He blessed it...He broke it...He gave it and said...This is my body; this signifies and represents my body. This would not be hard to see what He was saying if you would understand it as they would have...being that it was the Passover and there is alot of meaning and significance with it.
You mean it wasn't to be taken literally. I see, now I understand you. What is literal, is not and what is not, is.
No they had the actual letters and gospels and even the disciples themselves
Most people couldn't read! So they relied on the apostles ie the Church.

cmotherofpirl
This is where you are mistaken...the church doesn't say what the truth of the bible is...the bible says what the truth of the church is...we know what the church is to be and what a Christian is to be by reading the bible...we know how we are to be by reading the scriptures...not by what the church tells us.
No you have it exactly backwards, because you are ignoring history. The Church started at Pentecost, at that point there was no "new" Testament, only the Law and Prophets. The CHURCH put the New Testament together, it proceeds the New Testament in history: the New Testament is a snapshot of the Apostolic Age. The Church decided what books were inspired and what were not. Scripture ITSELF confirms the importance of the Church : "But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth." - 1 Timothy 3,
Papist
The pride lies at your end not mine...it's clearly seen by your fleshly responses...and if you can't see that it's because you are so deep in it you can't see past it...as for you reference to the bible and my thoughts toward it gives more evidence on my behalf...you might want to check yourself...to see if that spirit that is leading you is the Holy Spirit. If this wasn't symbolic and the bread which He gave to His disciples was not being represented as His body then your claiming that It was His actual body which He broke there and gave it to His disciples to eat? Things can be clearly understood if you weren't so proud in your own intellect. Read the verse in It's original language or better yet in the language in which He would have spoken it in.
Why did everyone listening to Jesus believe He meant to literally eat His flesh. It makes no sense for everyone to turn away from Jesus if He was talking symbolically. And if they were wrong to turn away from Jesus for believing He meant to literally eat His flesh then why didn't Jesus correct their misunderstanding? Please help me here.
