Laudate_Dominum
From EWTN: Canadian Catholic children must take world religions course, court rules "An indoctrination in relativism, the parents said, would interfere with their right to raise the children in the Catholic faith." I fail to see how a world religions course would be an indoctrination in relativism. These parents sound pretty defensive and scared. Children must be sheltered from basic knowledge about the world and other peoples otherwise their Catholic upbringing will be compromised? I really don't get it. eagle_eye222001
The parents, identified only as “L†and “J†for privacy reasons, maintained that the program taught their children a form of relativism – by forcing them to treat all beliefs as equally valid, and set aside their religious beliefs in class discussions.
Does the program really make you treat all religions as =? Or is it just like an exposure class that says, "religion A does this, religion B does that.....because that would be ok. Hard to tell if the parents are over reacting or have good reason to take the time sue. Good reason to home school if you are overly concerned about school courses.
In their response to the ruling, Quebec's Catholic bishops said they respected the basic aims of the course, “to the extent that it respects freedom of conscience of young people and their parents.†The bishops of the province said they would “continue to maintain an attitude of openness and caution,†remaining “critical and vigilant†in light of Friday's ruling.
Bishops seem to be taking a cautious approach. They probably share the parents concerns, but at this point don't see enough to make a big deal about it, and instead keep an eye on it. Basilisa Marie
Most world religion courses that I've ever seen are super careful about not offending anyone, recognize that there might be some kids who are that religion in class, and are really just good exercises in understanding people who are different from you. If anything, all students in the US should be forced to take a world religions course. Maybe then we'd have fewer people who are ignorant about other religions, Catholicism included.
