Oh yes, who could forget that? Men didn't even know how to shoot a gun back then. 70% of the deaths in WWII happened because men messed with their guns and shot themselves, and the other 30% is because they beat each other to death with guns.

Could you please tell me where you found these statistics? My father was a German pow and you dishonor him and all he served with.

Your sarcasm aside, we did manage to take nearly 200 casualties among the men attacking an island with no enemy combatants on it in World War Two thanks to friendly fire and booby traps. At least according to Nathan Miller's War at Sea: A Naval History of World War Two, they managed to find coffee the Japanese had left behind. Oh, and the crew of a destroyer managed to almost assassinate FDR twice in one day and then later in their ship's career, managed to drunkenly shell their base commander's home.

Those are highly atypical though, even in a conscript based army, where yes, men were reluctant to kill others.

That gun appears to be one of the greatest combat rifles ever: the M1 Garand.

He might be confused with 'Nam.
The average age for that war was 18 or 19, and no, a lot of those "men" didn't know how to use a gun (though I can't and do not attempt to say how many if any inadvertently killed themselves because of it). There was little to no training before they were shipped out.

I dishonor him? The first Swigart (My family name) that migrated to America from Germany came during the American Revolution. Odds are, he fought. Then, though I don't know for a fact, odds are his grandson fought in the Civil War. I know for a fact that the son of this man fought in WWI, as we still have his Springfield (The Army let you take your gun home to keep back then). His son, my great grandpa Odis, was a Marine in World War II and fought in Pearl Harbor and other battles like this. His son, John, was in the Air Force. His generation of children would never enlist, but I have many cousins and in-laws that are in the Military. And think: this is just on one side. My mother's side has had a few in the Military as well, and all of this doesn't take into account the Swigart that came from America and his father and grandfathers, whom most likely fought in the Crusades and in other battles. They all had more courage in their pinky than the entire secular population has combined. The point is, I come from a Military family. I have nothing but the utmost respect for them, and I wanted to join the Army or Marine Corps for a very long time until I felt a different calling. I would never say anything to disrespect the Military. In fact, I'm a hardcore Conservative. What I said was a joke, referring to the new-age hippies that claim men before the sixties were thoughtless and brutal barbarians, when in fact, the new-age hippies aren't half as smart as they think they are, and they are the reason we have the society that was shoved upon us today. It was sarcasm, and I recommend kicking it on back and not taking things so seriously. Life is too short to worry about people with stupid positions. The only time you worry about them is when they run for office.

You mean someone who actually worked their way out of poverty to become a general and the President of the United States? :) Love the tour of his farm in Gettysburg! Especially the little toys he kept that he and his wife sent away with from the coupons from cereal boxes, it really shows that they weren't the all too often stuck up politicians.
