I post things about social justice issues, especially issues that overlap. While many of my friends do not agree with me on issues like abortion and birth control (college student...), they have realized that the Catholic church is really full of great beliefs when it comes to social justice. I hope I can bring them in that way.

So I post things about immigration (Dream act), the death penalty (I live in a very pro-death penalty state), care of the environment, rights of workers, etc. It's brought on some really interesting conversations.

You were afraid that people would unfriend you. I have a very liberal friend. She is lesbian, and believes that states should allow gay marriage. While we don't agree on that, nor do we agree on a lot of things, we've been able to come to understand each other's arguments more. We've realized we can have different beliefs but still be friends. If someone on Facebook can't take a differing opinion for what it is--a differing opinion, then they need to mature a bit more.

So don't worry about it! Facebook is great in many respects. Without it, I wouldn't be able to keep in touch so well with my best friends since we are literally thrown across the world!

For the first time I actually deleted someone. They posted a cartoon about how Catholics were homophobic racists, and that crossed my line. I feel bad, but not bad enough to put them back on.

I had a "friend" who decided I wanted to have 200 more friends, so I woke up to over 200 recommendations. I was forced to delete him. I like "friends" as much as the next person, but that was just annoying, and he KEPT doing it. Needless to say, when he requested to "friend" me again I had to ignore him.

So, I've unfriended like 5 people in the past couple of weeks. Facebook is SUCH a happier place now... :) Some people just finally crossed the line, and I used my rules: "One stupid post. Would I invite them to my wedding? No. Bye-bye." But then there are those people I would HAVE to invite to my wedding... I guess I could just block them. It comes to a point when I can't even help them anymore. All I can do is pray. I don't want to be angry anymore. So, for the rest of Lent I am off facebook. I think it is better for me.

"I'm sorry I feel called to be a nun" isn't really something I can say.

When I spill about discerning (when I'm older) on my cousin Allison... she will probably be happy for me but if not... she will totally get that. :|

See how nice I am? :smile2:

When I got pregnant, before posting anything on FB about it, I went through all my friends and first deleted anyone I hadn't talked to in a year (either on FB or through other means). Then, I went back through and deleted anyone that I would not want knowing anything details about my child. My one other rule is that I don't delete family. If they annoy me, I put them on ignore, and so far that's worked out fine. If I post anything religious related (when I do, it's typically a quote or something like that) they have not commented on those sorts of posts. If they were to get annoying about that, I'd just stick them in a different group, limiting what they could see on my FB. I'm really not on there to debate. I'm there to keep in touch with family and friends.

My rules:
1) Never delete a comment.

Boy have I been tempted to multiple times...once I had people calling Sesame Street a den of "Socialist homosexuals". Another time, I had 3 Trad Catholics pile driving on someone who was waffling about remaining Catholic or not, and got defriended by the latter because she felt cyber-bullied. The most infamous time had to be the 156 comment flame war when I posted an article about Christians and Muslims protecting one another as they prayed in Tahrir Square in the Egyptian revolution.

2) Never delete a friend without explaining.

I always explain when I defriend people, because I always wonder what I did to make someone cranky when I realize they defriended me.

3) Always try to respect others' opinions.

I have a friend who posts over 90 links a day on average; some of them I'll share. Others I'll just try not to get angry at. In her world, if you're a Catholic, you're a mindless drone follower of the Republican Party, which is the Party of all that is wrong in the world and no Democrat can ever do wrong. If you're a generic Protestant, you're better than a Catholic, but still a deluded fool. Once in a while I'll wade in to her stuff to clear up misconceptions on Catholicism and usually get attacked on all sides for it. I actually would be warned or banned on PM for posting the things I normally get called.

4) Never delete family.

Self explanatory. That said, I do reserve the right to refuse friend requests. Does my second half-cousin on my mother's side really need to friend me?

Good rules. I think I am bit less tolerant than you, though. My rule is "One stupid post? Would I invite you to my wedding? Bye bye!" No explanation needed. But if I WOULD invite them to my wedding whether obligation or not, and it was bothering me that much, I will hide or block them. I've thought several times about blocking my grandmother. She often attacks my faith, and that makes me super angry. I try to respect her, though, but sometimes, it's just too hard. Good thing I gave up facebook for the rest of Lent!
