AnneLine
Ohhhh.... now THAT reminds me of a true story... A while back, I was a postulant in a religious community. One of the ones with the full habits, the long scapulars, rosaries, full veils, the works. Postulants have much less beautiful outfits, and aren't allowed to talk to the professed sisters. And if we couldn't talk to the professed sisters, you better BET we didn't talk to the managment - the Mother Provincial and her Council... like Edwardian children, we were silent unless spoken to.... and longed for the day when one of those beautiful habits would be ours... Now... the postulants lived in a separate building, but we joined the community for prayers and meals. We came through a gate and a long outdoor passageway on the way to the entrance to the choir. There were locked gates at the ends of the passage. It was shortly after daylight savings time had begun, and it was DARK going down that hallway. One evening another postulant and were heading to the choir for meditation and evening prayer. It was about 5:30 and it was DARK, and I think it was cold and windy, too. We opened the gate, glancing at each other because it was SO DARK (the lights were on a timer, but it hadn't come on yet). We closed the gate and started down the dark passage, feeling for the light switch we knew was 10 feet or so down the hallway. Suddenly from within the dark depths we heard a soft, terrified voice, whispering, "Help me, please help me...." Heart pounding, I felt for the light switch, and turned it on to a scene of madnesss.... The Mother Provincial was backed against the wall... cowering... and the goose that was the bane of our existance (becuase we had to clean up after the beast!) had cornered her and was flapping like a mad thing, nipping at her sandaled toes, yanking on her rosary and grabbing her scapular. I don't know how long they had been trapped in there together, but it had been a LONG battle judging by the droppings that were all over her and all over the passageway....and by the terrified look on the Provincial's face.... I got him out of there while the other postulant literally held the sobbing and hysterical Provincial in her arms.... she was totally freaked... and who wouldn't have been. I guess the gander was freaked out, too.... And for once we didn't get into trouble for talking with a Professed sister!!!! Gander had been originally given to the Sisters as a potential Easter Dinner... I bet the provincial was re-considering that option.... Christmas was coming....
