I'm giving up sugar, I think. I know it sounds juvenile and not very sacrificial... but I did it last year and believe me, it will be.

I'll allow myself juice and things that may contain sugar, but I'm avoiding all candy, cake, cookies, pies, ice cream, soda, etc. I'll allow jam on toast, but I won't make pancakes and slather them with syrup (the kids can have it but I'll eat something else). It'd be really hard to cut out all sugars just because they pop up in everything.

I think I may have given up booze last year, too, but I forget now... I know I did the sugar thing, though, because Lent started the day BEFORE I received the girl scout cookies I'd ordered.

This is what I'm doing, too, and I agree with you 100% -- there is nothing juvenile about it. I did it a few years ago and it definitely felt like Lent the entire time.

I'm trying to work on discipline, and given my ridiculous sweet tooth, I think this is a great start.

That said, if you want someone to scream with, I'm here for ya. ;)

No clue. Won't be food-related. I'm nursing, and I need my food.

Yeah, last year was the first time in about 8 or 9 years that I wasn't pregnant or nursing so I decided it was fitting that I take a turn to give up something food related. And since I indulge quite a bit in baked goods it was a natural choice.

Yeah, discipline was definitely part of it. I do tend to bake a lot of sweets or have them on hand so having them for the kids but keeping my own paws off was a good test in will power and sacrifice. lol

I gave up chocolate once and I am considering doing it again, but it did almost kill me. And I am considering soda and Facebook too

I also hope our cafeteria will be meat free on Wednesday and every Friday of Lent. Those who are non-Catholics here won't be happy

I am not sure yet. But I am thinking giving up hot showers or no food after dinner or call one person everyday giving them a compliment.

I've been trying to think of things I can do for penance that will also not cause me to be continually cranky. IMO, the whole benefit of penance is defeated if you're constantly crabby. I know I know, "Just offer it up." Guess what, I'm not there yet. There are some things I could give up which I can definitely say will put me over the edge if I do them for 40 days.
