havok579257
Is it ok to make promises to God? I was reading the CCC and i don't know if i misunderstood it but are oaths/promises to God wrong? I am not talking about promising to God that if you do this, then I will do this. I just mean if you promise God you will go to confession on a certain day. Is this wrong? cappie
In the letter of St James we read in Chapter 4 verse 13 "Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we shall go into such and such a town, spend a year there doing business, and make a profitâ€â€” 14you have no idea what your life will be like tomorrow. You are a puff of smoke that appears briefly and then disappears." He's talking of making plans, but I think it applies to promises as well. Who am I to make promises? Anything could happen to me between now and tomorrow. Also, because I'm human, I am prone to fickleness, which means it's hardly a good idea to boast of my reliability. I suppose we could say "I will do this or that, by God's grace"?
