Favorite/best Translation Of St. Augustine's Confessions

Dear phriends,

I must confess that I have never read St. Augustine's Confessions in its entirety. I remember reading bits and pieces as a freshmen in college and I asked myself the question "what is he saying?" Considering now that I am more advanced in theological thinking and two of my professors have said that it is a must read, and one even suggesting to read it every year, I am now in the quandary of one translation should I obtain? Which is the best in your opinion?

Thanks for the help.

I read it a year ago on audiobook, by Librivox. I have no experience with other translations of the book, but when I was getting the link just now I saw that it was translated by an Albert C. Outler. I had to look him up and found that he was a 20th century Methodist philosopher/theologian, but in any case, I found it to be quite a beautiful book and very helpful towards my prayer life. The reader for the audiobook had a good voice, too.

I hope that's of some help!

I know very little about it. I had a roommate who swore by Sheed's translation. Last time I read that text it was the Chadwick translation and I thought it was good.

The last few times I've had to read it we used the Oxford Henry Chadwick version. It's not the most poetic, but it's fairly easy to read and all my professors used it.

This could really be helpful for me if I take the course we have here for Confessions of St. Augustine. I want to be able to understand it and pass the class

This is on my reading list.. I also don't know which translation. I read that some translations are missing concepts present in the Catholic translations? I'd get it from a Catholic publisher maybe, just in case...?
