Nihil Obstat
there is indeed an opinion that +Lefebvre's excommunication was lifted by the decree lifting the excommunications of the four bishops. the wording at the end of the Congregation's decree declares the motu proprio Ecclesia Dei Adflicta "void of juridical effect". that is the decree which declared +Lefebvre to be excommunicated. Some think that this was a shrewd way of effectively lifting +Lefebvre's excommunication post humously without having to deal with the media mocking about post-humous excommunication lifting, spreading the misinformation about how the Church thinks it can decide who's in hell or not, and also avoiding increasing the liberal backlash against the excommunication lifting. anyway, that's a side topic... I think the Church is very very reluctant to pronounce excommunications officially against politicians for fear of the public backlash. that's the type of thing that would cause a serious backlash of Americans who don't like the idea of the Church so explicitly influencing the government. and it would be proper for the local bishop to be the one excommunicating them and that could spell serious trouble for the tax exempt status. if there were a Catholic president like that it might be proper for Rome to pronounce the excommunication but on lower levels of government I would think the local gov't' would make more sense, and there's serious issues there to be considered.
Would that speculation also apply to Antonio de Castro Mayer, or would we be looking at the same sort of scenario when the SSJV was formally established instead? Basilisa Marie
Um, what's the point of this thread? Why does it matter whether or not someone is excommunicated? Obviously all of us know that these people don't promote policy that is in line with Church teaching. I'm having a hard time seeing charity in this thread.
