Selah
Gotcha. So has anyone died while excommuincated in the past ? Cause we would know 100 percent for sure these people are in hell then right ?
Even then, the ultimate fate of their souls is in the hands of God and God alone. which is why we pray for them, even after death. There is no 100% way to know if someone is in hell. Frankly, I find the idea that one would want to know rather morbid.
qfnol31
A few people have died excommunicated and then had the excommunications lifted after their death. This happened with the Orthodox bishops at one point. I think it happened with Archbishop Lefebvre not too long ago.
Well like I said, we'd be sure in theory, in a vacuum, but in real life there are all kinds of circumstances, chief of which would be invincible ignorance, that would mitigate guilt. Lots of people have died excommunicated, but I wouldn't say for sure about any one in particular being in hell. They may have had a sincere desire to repent at the moment they died... they could have completely and utterly misunderstood their theology so badly that they fell into heresy and were too stupid to understand the Church's condemnation... Nihil Obstat
If I'm not mistaken, Joan of Arc was excommunicated when she was burnt at the stake, and the excommunication was later proven invalid. Or something along those lines. ETA: Wikipedia isn't a good source for understanding the intricacies of Canon Law, just fyi for armchair canon lawyers. ^_^ Edited February 6, 2012 by Nihil Obstat

Although there is a decent debate to be had on the fate of Judas, and in my opinion there's also a very interesting discussion as to whether or not the rich man Jesus spoke of who didn't help the beggar Lazarus was a real person or just another parable. It's been argued, and I think it's compelling enough to investigate further, that this is the only 'parable' that Jesus tells in which He names the characters (specifically Lazarus), which may indicate that they were in fact real people. Apparently that was the accepted interpretation of the medieval Church, which Luther challenged.

The Pharisees did terrible things to Jesus, but he never did anything except point out their mistakes. He never said "To Hell with you!". I can understand your concern, and your position on this, but you should never say these things or hold these feelings about anybody. Making these comments won't help her, praying will.
