Clareni
(Can you believe there are 3 Orthodox priests for the whole of China??)
Probably in Harbin, which was a Russian city in many ways before 1949 and has an Orthodox Cathedral although I don't know if it is still used as a church. Clareni
Eastern Rite Carmelites in Bulgaria who pray for the unity of the Catholic and Orthodox churches. Theirs is also a story of incredible suffering and heroic perseverance. FutureCarmeliteClaire
I was blessed today to talk to an elderly woman who's sister entered this order at 16, before they modified the habits (they modified them while she was there), and she and I talked for quite a while about the religious life. It was wonderful! Without further adieu - The Sisters of Christian Charity! The veil looks kind of in the shape of a heart and then the ribbon on the bottom . . . that is the Valentine's Day Edition habit.

AnneLine
That is the original habit of the Sisters of Christian Charity that IgnatiusofLoyola used to speak about so highly. According to the story of their foundress (Bl. Pauline von Mallinckrodt) was showing the new habit her community had adopted to her brother, and he playfully took his cane and smashed down the center, commenting that now his sister had a heart around her face. They community liked it so much that it became part of their habit! I have a feeling it WASN't very comfortable - and that was true of many of the beautiful old habits. I love them and I like to see some kind of habit on sisters, but I know from talking to them in the 1960's and 1970's (when I was a in elementary school and high school) that almost all of them were very grateful when some of the modifications started. I remember one of the Sisters of Perpetual Adoration (a Mexican Community that is still in San Francisco and still in full habit, but with modified headgear) told me that their original guimpe (fluted piece around the neck and chest) looked a lot like the one the nuns in the Sound of Music wore... and that the starched pleats literally wore their ears bloody.... (it's hard to see from these pictures, but you can get the idea if you think of the Sound of Music habits...) They are an excellent community, by the way: and wow -- looks like they are getting ready to launch a new website... some parts aren't ready, but it is really beautiful!!!!! : http://www.adorejesus.org/index.html This is what they are wearing now, and it seems to me they did a good job of making a practical change--a soft coif with a band and simplified scapular: Edited March 28, 2012 by AnneLine

littlesister
Long ago and far away,I had them for one excellent summer class. They were just as sweet as they look! Sister explained that their original headpiece was a perfect oval, but when the foundress' brother saw it he didn't like it at all. So he cracked down the highest point with the side of his hand, giving it the heart shape, and that's how it stayed.
