Socrates
i respectfully disagree. The Church is CATHOLIC, not conservative, not liberal, not modernist, but plain and simply CATHOLIC... conservative does not = TRUTH liberal does not = TRUTH modernist does not = TRUTH The Catholic Church= TRUTH now, you can make an argument on whether or not the USCCB is being overrun by "political correctness" all you want... when I read the OP, I immediately thought about how we are stewards of this earth we live in, and God would certainly want us to be responsible with the care of the earth and the enviroment because it is a gift He gave us... ...AND for those who have suffered terribly because of drought conditions...its nice to think of those poor people once in a while... isn't it? I have to admit, I don't usually spend hours thinking of this issue... Texas went through the worst drought in its history and we're still not out of it yet. I live amongst farmers and ranch hands. They have suffered tremendously, and took a significant financial hit. This also made me think of other countries, especially third world countries where drought and famine are the norm...its hard to imagine what life is like for those poor people who don't have the comfort and the luxury we do in ours...it would be nice if for once we Catholics would see issues through the eyes of the LORD and not through the eyes of political ideologies that would cause us to act in ignorance to the least of our brothers...
Sigh . . . Next time try reading what I actually wrote before "disagreeing." I didn't say the Church was conservative; I said I was. I took issue with the idea that the Catholic position is always "in the middle" between conservative and liberal. As I pointed out that's not accurate. A Catholic can be a conservative, and need not be a "middle-of-the-roader." The Church is no more "in between" right and left than She is right or left. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with praying for good weather and good harvests. In fact it's a great thing, and I pray for such things myself. My issue was more with tying it into the politicized "climate change" issues. I said I thought bickering over this prayer request was silly.
If you read Socrates post careful, he says that he believes conservative positions line up the most with the Catholic position, not that the Church= conservative (an important distinction). His post was in response to (in fact Socrates was agreeing with) a post that said that we are called to be Catholics before anything else, which I think lines up with what your criticism of his post is saying. And your last two paragraphs aren't called for by what he wrote, he says that praying and fasting is a good thing, regardless of ones personal opinion on global warming. vee
Come to Canada, our bishops tend to be a bunch of and who tend to promote croutons like this http://www.devp.org/en
vee
The group I linked to in the last post has had problems in that there are serious allegations as to whether or not money fomr that group goes to other groups that promote birth control in the countries they "aid." It is sad how there seems to be a fine line between "saving the Earth" and getting rid of the humans who over populate it. Sorry to derail from the the original topic of how the US bishops seem to simply want people to pray for those affected by nature through drought etc.
