Sojourner
OK, I think I saw another thread about this a while back in another forum, but I don't remember which one or when ... but I think it's really appropriate for this forum. So anyway, let's talk about sponsors. I chose a good friend of mine to be my sponsor. She's a cradle Catholic, and I think the process was good for her as well as for me. My sponsor went with me to almost all my classes, and we had some really good conversations as a result. I think several people in my class didn't realize exactly what a sponsor is supposed to do, and our instructor didn't do a good job of informing people about it. So a couple of weeks before Easter, several people didn't have sponsors lined up and they had to be recruited at the last minute.
homeschoolmom
I'm sure that I mentioned before the our sponsors were our RCIA teacher and his wife. We didn't know anyone and they offered to do it. They were really great. They talked to us about the difficulty of leaving our church, encouraged us not to cut spiritual ties with our friends (ie still pray with them, share spiritual stuff etc) at a time when I was ready to throw in the towel. They answered every question that we ever had, connected us with other homeschoolers in our parish and encouraged us to get envolved. I'm sure part of that was RCIA teacher and part was sponsor, but either way, they did a great job. I would be a sponsor for someone. We missed about 65% of the classes... PedroX
My sponsor was my best friend. He really encouraged me when I was down and helped me to act sanely. I really owe a lot of my conversion to him. I don't know if I could have completed it all without him pushing me and listening to all my fears and heartache. I would love to be a sponsor. peace... Ellenita
My sponsor is my closest friend too. She is cradle catholic, and hadn't been to mass for many years but is now going every week! Although she didn't know much about catholicism when I first asked her, it was absolutely the right thing to ask her to be my sponsor - it meant so much to me that she was with me and it's wonderful that she is rediscovering her faith as a result of it. Our sponsors didn't join us at RCIA so I would rush home afterwards and call her to talk about what I'd learnt! I was also really blessed to have on line sponsors too who I met through Phatmass who answered my thousends of questions..... I am so thankful to them for their wonderful support and infinite patience!
Archaeology cat
If you don't know anyone who could be your sponsor, does the church assign you one, or do you have to find one on your own? Unfortunately the good Catholic friends I have here are moving, and I'm just starting to learn more about Catholicism so that I can convert. theculturewarrior
All I can say is take care in choosing your sponsor. It can be a difficult decision.

Sojourner
Oh, and I think you can have long-distance sponsors, so you might be able to still have your friends who are moving as sponsors, providing they could be with you when you are received.
