Lilllabettt
How good are your grades? Im an IR major. A lot of the best schools (Harvard, Columbia, etc) don't have undergraduate IR departments, but you can design your own course of study, and the greatness of the school itself means your custom program prepare you well. As far as actual programs ... Johns Hopkins is good. University of Chicago. Georgetown (Catholic! yay!) probably has the best in the country, but its over-crowded. I didn't have the grades to get into the top 1-9 programs, so I went to #10 ... George Washington. Setting the school thing aside ... DC is a great place to do IR. I got to do research at the NSA, interview the Russian desk at the State Department and drink cocktails on Embassy Row. I'm sure someone with more moxie could capitalize on the location even more.
I had a weighted 3.6 GPA before junior year started. Last semester killed me and my GPA dropped to a 3.4, but the main reason why it dropped wasn't under my control. I finished the last six weeks off well with a mid to high B average. This semester is like a make or break for me. The University of Chicago has sent me a lot of stuff by email and mail, and I do like the school, but I'm just worried about my grades. They werent supposed to drop that low this year, and it smells of elderberries because it wasn't my fault. But i'm still hopeful and my college and career counselor said I could write and extenuating circumstance essay to the office of admissions, so hopefully that would help me a lot. What's George Washington like??

Many university's that aren't Catholic still have many solid resources for Catholic students (in the form of a Catholic Campus Ministry, Newman Club, or similar). I went to a 4-year public state university but got to go to daily Mass, grow in my faith and make likeminded friends. It's more affordable, too. I'm not saying don't go to a Catholic school, but don't be afraid of looking into secular colleges if the geography programs don't quite fit at your Catholic choices.
yeah i'm completely open to public schools too. It's just finding the one's with what I want with a good catholic center that's kinda tricky. But y'all are helping me alot! LinaSt.Cecilia2772
University of St. Thomas (Houston, TX) It doesn't quite meet you out of state preference, but no one really ever wants to leave Texas anyways. Great school and I believe they have study abroad options in mexico and ireland, but I could be off on that.
Yeah I have an uncle who used to work at St. Thomas, he said I would like it but i haven't looked much into it. I'll add it to my research list. Thanks!!
University of Denver (DU) is a good school, expensive but good. You won't freeze too badly in Denver (I'm a native to CO). We only get really bad snow storms about once every three years. Another good school you might want to look into is Saint Louis University, I don't know about the major side of things but they have a really strong Campus Ministry program, Daily Mass, retreats, clubs (don't miss out on Campion Society) and lots of other stuff. LinaSt.Cecilia2772
Okay so it's been awhile since I've updated you all on my college search. Lot's of things have changed since then, and I need some opinions on some places if y'all can. Here is the new official list of schools that I am looking at and want to visit. I will be visiting at least the Northeastern ones, and I'm hoping we can afford to take a long weekend trip to California or Colorado to visit the ones there. Note: These aren't in order of preference. The ones marked with a * are the ones I'm most interested in. The ones that are underlined are Catholic. 1. the171
I know you are looking out of state, but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the University of Dallas. Catholic. Faithful. Academically EXCELLENT! Basilisa Marie
Mount St. Mary's University alumna right here! I had a fantastic experience there. The most unique part is how multidimensional its Catholicism is. Campus ministry is very, very strong there. There are something like 4 or 5 daily masses around campus, Marian Devotion groups (some of which are run by deacons), adoration, very popular service trips, pro-life groups, bible studies, Nun-Runs (visit local orders!), FOCUS missionaries, and small faith-sharing groups, among other things. It really lets you explore your faith and try out new ways to deepen it. All the professors care about your academic and personal well-being. The philosophy department is strong in ancient and medieval philosophy, and the theology department prepares you to go out and do ministry. The business and education programs are also fantastic. Since there's a major seminary on campus, seminarians are a very vibrant presence, and all the sports teams have chaplains. It's a kind of "invitational" Catholicism, rather than a "completely immersive" that you'd find at some other schools. But the school takes its commitment to Catholicism very seriously, and is striving to form young adults who can critically examine the world and transform it. Though the university's a bit out in the middle of nowhere, campus activities does a fantastic job of bringing in amesome talent on the weekends. Random people will smile and wave on the way to the dining hall, and people actually hold doors for each other. It was the weirdest thing my freshman year, getting used to that. Plus they offer automatic scholarships based solely on SAT and GPA numbers, if you've got pretty good grades, to help defer the private school sticker price. LinaSt.Cecilia2772
UPDATE: I have officially registered for college preview days at Mount St. Mary's University, and Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore at the end of July. There will be more colleges that I will see on the same trip though, just haven't figured out the logistical stuff yet.

Extenuating circumstances kept me from taking the tests sooner and dropped my GPA. I hope to raise both of them by the end of the first semester this upcoming year. Ice_nine
What are your grades and SAT scores? I'm mainly wondering because, if they're high enough, I would suggest that you apply to a a few schools that are more selective.
Not 2 b a beesh, but I had pretty beaver dam good gpa and decent SATs, got rejected from 4/6 schools I applied to. It's just really competitive out there, and I was major disappoint because I was advised to try for more selective schools, but because I can't speak five languages or build a robot or build a school for children in Rwanda I didn't have more than a snowball's chance. I say go to a school that you can afford and that you can grow as the person you want to be blah blah blah, and don't stress out too much about it. Most schools have the resources you need to carve out whatever path you want, it's just that you might have to be more proactive in finding opportunities if you go to a state school versus an ivy league college (where tons of good poo is practically thrown at you). But Brandies is near Boston. And Boston is pretty rad. Sorry my advice sucks! Good luck tho
