Need To Convert A Document (Not To Catholicism, But Still Could Use Yo

That header SHOULD have read, '... but still could use your help!"

Hi, all,

I'm hoping some of you might have some ideas for me.

A friend of mine accidently converted a word document into a word perfect document. (She's a cloistered religious sister so she can't just go out and get the document fixed at fed ex or somesuch place)

She doesn't know how she did it (she said she just tried to open it on an old computer, and suddently she couldn't open it NOR access it). She tried to send it to me by email but when I tried to open it, my computer indicated it is a word perfect document and I can't open it, either in Word or even as a text document in wordpad.

I tried downloading Open Office, and even THAT couldn't open it. I'm out of ideas... but some of you are more teckie than I....

I've suggested to her that she might try to see if she can save it with a .txt extension... but do any of the rest of you have any ideas for us. The document is kind of important (of course)....

Thanks!

Save it to your documents folder and try changing the name to xxxxxx.doc

I haven't converted documents without having it open first, but it's worth a shot, right?

Wow, you are a guru. I'd like to know how you did it. :)

EDIT: in case you're wondering how I went about this- I opened the file in a hex editor and tried to decode the file's header to determine format, but the header didn't match the document's actual encoding, so I was beginning to extract the text by hand when you wrote in. You must have access to a strange word processing program that ignores the file header and just assumes the rest of the document is in a certain format.

Open Office, Libre Office, Geany, and of course MS Office all rejected the file even when I tampered with the encapsulation it was supposed to be looking for.

Papist and Arfink... you are both wonderful guys and beloved of God!!!!

Papist was able to open it.... and both Sister and I are SO GRATEFUL!!!!

Arfink, I would be curious to know how Papist did it too.... I tried a bunch of stuff too!

This is such a good example of Catholic Community coming together to help each other... dUSt should be proud!

Will be remembering both of you in the LOTH today.... so the entire Church will be praying for your intentions.

Blessings,

AnneLine and Sister

I look forward to being schooled. I probably just missed something painfully obvious...

I have Office 2003 on XP
Went to Control Panel / Add or Remove Programs
Click Change on Microsoft Office 2003
Select Add or Remove Features / click Next
Check the box for Choose advanced customization of applications.
On the Advanced Customization screen, navigate to Office Shared Features/Converters and fiddlers/Text Converters

Right-click on WordPerfect 6.x Converter, and click Run from My Computer. Do the same for WordPerfect 5.x Converter.

Click Update. You will need your Office CD.

Once complete, you simply open the WordPerfect document and Word automatically converts it to Word.
Once open, Save As a .doc Word file.

When in Word, you should see WordPerfect as an available file type when opening a file.

Interesting. But did the resulting document come through cleanly, or not? I attempted a similar procedure but was rewarded with garbage, and that's why I just gave up fiddling with fiddlers and used the hex editor. Oh well. :)

Ah, Louie, Louie.... thanks for the clarification.

I will be keeping those instructions & sending them to Sister!!!

As far as the conversion, it came through very cleanly. :)

Thanks again, Papist & ARFink!
