I Want To Begin Veiling Full-Time

But my school's dress code won't allow me to do this. Not even the small kercheif style. Any advice? Anyone who veils full-time? ahhhh, it's so bothersome.

Offer it up until you get to college? :idontknow:

Obedience to authority is a good principle to instill now if you are discerning religious life. Even if you don't necessarily agree.

I thought about that (no college for me by the way :) ) and the dress code says nothing about religious exemptions. There are no Muslims at our school so I don't know if it's even close to possible. Lol

I'm just curious :) how did you decide to veil full-time? I cover my head for Mass so I'm not critiquing the idea at all... just wondering :) and I hope I'm not derailing the thread.. thanks!

You could always wear a 2 or 3 inch headband. There are some cute ones at Garlands of Grace, and if you are particularly crafty, you can make your own!

No, no, no. Good question. I started out by wearing a mantilla to mass on my fourteenth birthday. I've always admired Mennonite women (there are a few communities areound my area) and other religious women (Catholic and non) who cover their heads. As a girl who strives to be modest but still approachable, veiling full-time first seemed like a strange and unattractive concept for me. But lately, it has been tugging at my heart. Lately, I have found that many other Catholic women veil full-time. I'm not forcing this on anyone. It is a personal choice. Just like wearing a veil to mass.

I have wanted too as well, I keep going back and forth, though...

I veil in Church, though. I have like 6 mantillas. :)

thanks for the reply! :) If I may ask, why do some Catholic women veil all the time, including outside of Church? I hope it doesn't seem like I'm opposing or debating this, cause I'm not :) just trying to learn! I know that we veil at Mass out of respect for the Blessed Sacrament... what about outside of Church?

[/quote] You may be able to ask your guidance counselor or asst/principle for further explaination. It may be that it is allowed in religious situations but that it hasn't yet come up. :) Other religions would be allowed, I'm sure... as you said though, you don't have any practicing Muslim students, but would they allow a yarmuke? Just a thought. I'm not suggesting "fighting the man" but just understanding your rights as a practicing Catholic. I've read of the ACLU (sometimes controversial, I know) defending Catholics when their schools threatened to ban students from wearing/carrying Rosaries and crosses.

Yeah...plus I think there might be a difference between a Catholic woman wearing a veil full-time and a Muslim woman wearing a hijab, because the hijab is a pseudo-requirement for most Muslim women, while a veil full-time is a personal expression of personal piety. But I'm someone who doesn't wear the veil, so this could very well be my ignorance about the subject coming through! What if you found a good 3-inch headband or something to wear during school, and put on your veil when you left the building? I'd still talk to your school councilors, though. The worst they can do is say no!

I have been thinking of doing this as a way of quietly signalling my unavailability to guys. I got into an awkward situation with a friend recently - he became attracted to me without knowing that I'm a candidate with a secular institute, which isn't something I'm supposed to broadcast to the world, and it has got me very perplexed about how I'm supposed to handle advances from guy friends who are interested in me and think I'm available. A headcovering might demonstrate that unavailability, but women in secular institutes aren't supposed to have distinctive dress either - it's not part of the charism. I'm at a loss. I guess I'll just have to bring it up with the women in the institute and see how they have managed it.

A wide headband is a good idea. Though I second the advice to talk to your guidence counselor about if there might be an exception.
I kind of know how you feel though. Especially since I have started veiling for Mass I have felt a stronger pull towards keeping my head covered at other times too.
