Martial Arts

Okay, this topic seems to have gotten off on a tangent rather than a simple answer to a question. I believe what the person starting the topic was trying to ask, is if practicing martial arts is okay for a Christian let alone a Catholic to practice. I also, was involved in martial arts. I took it at the Rec Center so it changed with the various instructors. American Karate, Tae Kwon Do, and Kook Sool Won (sp?). But, with certain karate fares there can be a deeper meaning of our unbeliefs just like you have to be careful with Yoga. Hence, Christian Yoga was started. I don't see how it all got started, nor do I have a link to an article for you. You may want to ask your parish priest/pastor about this. Hope I helped some!

Um... No. That's not what this thread was started for at all. Of course Karate is okay. It's just physical exercise and self-defense. I just wanted to know if anyone else was doing Karate here.

I read this as Marital Acts. I thought someone had come back to refute "the unmentionable" :|

Carry on.

I think you have selective reading, quite honestly. :P

I took Taekwondo and got to be a black belt. I love it, but it's been many years since I've trained (college and seminary get in the way a bit). I'm gonna try to get back into it though cause its wicked amesome.

Oh razzle dazzle. Is it real Tae Kwon Do or is it the more sporty one? I don't mean for this to be offensive, just so you know. I'm just curious about the type of school it is.

Oh, glad I didn't miss this thread. ^_^

I've been in Shotokan karate for around 14 years now. Second degree black belt, and I'll probably be given a third degree sometime in 2013. It's been a great thing for me, and I think at certain times in my life it's the only thing that kept me sane.

I'm pretty interested in martial arts in general, and while in the past I might have been a "karate purist", I'm definitely not anymore. If there were about two or three extra days in the week I'd love to be taking other martial arts as well, but as it is I can hardly keep up with karate. :(

I did Go Ju ru from 5 until about 18. I was the youngest person ever to get a blackbelt at that dojo but then kind of petered out. I never advanced beyong 1st degree black. I did it off and on until college and helped teach a self-defense class at the near by school in my hometown for whatever ECU's equivalent of LFIT is.

Nice! First time I've heard of anyone else doing Go Ju Ru. Ours was a mix between that and World Taekwando Federation TKD. I wasn't in it for too long though, only got up to a brown-striped blue belt.

Well, your question about whether it is "real Taekwondo" is an entirely different matter from whether or not it is "sporty." I would love to indulge the topic about what makes a real martial art or a real black belt, but that is a different discussion :).

As for what style of martial arts I took, it was ATA taekwondo. The ATA is sometimes characterized as commercially-driven, with a tendancy towards McDojo-ing. This somewhat true. I would add however that I received a very solid martial arts training at my school, and that it really all depends on the quality of the instructor. ATA TKD focuses on forms, point sparring, weapons forms, and board breaking.
