PhuturePriest
Does anyone else here practice Martial Arts? I have practiced American Go-Ju for eleven years. I am a purple belt and I am testing for brown belt this July. It will be a very brutal test. It will be between six to nine hours long, with a six to nine mile run before, on a hot July day and will be continued after the run in a hot gym. The black belts yell at us, and by the end of the night we will have done between six to nine hundred push-ups, six to nine hundred sit-ups, and many other things. We will be tested on our abilities in our katas and self-defenses, and we will have every mistake we make pointed out to us. It will not be fun, but finally having a brown belt after six years of being a purple belt will be worth it. After that, my dad will test for black, which lasts nine to twelve hours, and hopefully we can get out of the school then. If we decide not to, I will have to wait until I am eighteen to test for black belt.
4588686
I did Go Ju ru from 5 until about 18. I was the youngest person ever to get a blackbelt at that dojo but then kind of petered out. I never advanced beyong 1st degree black. I did it off and on until college and helped teach a self-defense class at the near by school in my hometown for whatever ECU's equivalent of LFIT is. MissMaro
I've done a tiny bit of Kung Fu. I'd like to get back into it, but I haven't done it regularly for a while.
TheresaThoma
I did a Korean Martial Art, Tang Soo Do for a bit. I had to move back home though and there isn't a school here. I do miss it at times. There is nothing like taking out your frustrations on a kick pad.

PhuturePriest
I have kung fu. In geekery. Especially computery things. Computer kung fu. Heck yes.
I don't think Kung Fu compares to Karate. Kung Fu is a lot of flash, really. Karate is straightforward: If you punch me here, I'll block and punch you here. Kung Fu is "If you punch me here, I'll do a spinning back-flip and chop your head off with my toe here." However, not all Kung Fu is like that. Many Karate schools are all about flash as well. My school is very straightforward and there's no flash. We don't do all those crazy flips that are completely useless in a fight. The fanciest thing we do is a spinning sidekick, and even that is only to be used in certain situations. If you try to do that right off the bat you'll probably get in trouble for trying to be flashy. I have a very strict school that's run by a Vietnam veteran. We do intense push-ups, sit-ups, leg raises, and stretches. Even our push-ups and sit-ups are different. We put our left foot over our right (Or vice-versa) when we do push-ups, which makes it harder. We also go all the way to the ground on our knuckles. Our sit-ups are quite different. We only go to where our upper middle back gets off the ground, but when we semi-get up we strike our legs. We do fifty of these. Also, the leg raises are very interesting. We put our right foot over our left, and we then raise our legs up over our head and to the ground behind our head, if possible. We do ten of these, and once we start we are not allowed to put our feet back on the ground. After we do ten of these we hold our feet six inches off the ground for a while, and we sometimes strike our stomach while doing this, making it increasingly difficult. Dennis Tate
I highly recommend doing a search for Abir Warrior Arts. This is a martial art that is based on the Hebrew alphabet. I also highly recommend doing a search for the astonishing study conducted by Dr. Hans Jenny who found that the Hebrew language seemed to have an especially powerful effect on finely ground sand in his tonoscope experiment

Just as you have flashy Karate, you have flashy Kung Fu, but that doesn't mean Kung Fu is necessarily flashy or less effective than karate. And personally, I like how Kung Fu better, but that's prolly because I saw a lot of Kung Fu on TV shows as a kid...
According to The Book of Jasher the patriarch Simeon and Judah were quite good at doing just that and it may have been quite effective. If I remember correctly many of the women of Egypt miscarried after Simeon shouted as loud as he could!!!???? That was during the time when the brothers were journeying down to Egypt and were meeting Joseph/Yosef who had not yet revealed his identity! http://www.ccel.org/a/anonymous/jasher/54.htm Edited January 26, 2012 by Dennis Tate
