Relaxation Music That Could Be "new Age"?

Hello,

I'm looking at some relaxation music on Amazon. There is a CD that has violin, piano, etc. and sounds normal but Amazon put it as being new age. Is this a problem?

Basilisa Marie

Bookstores will also put books on Tarot, Palmistry, and scrying in the "Metaphysics" section. :think2:

Labels like "New Age" and similar don't always mean something. Like Papist said, if it's just instrumental, you've got nothing to worry about. :)

Unless it's a cursed violin, you should be okay.

You'd better check the CD insert, just in case, though.

Eek. Before I converted, I listened to Enya. But she makes me feel weird, so I wouldn't listen anymore. What exactly is wrong with her music?

From a technical standpoint it's poorly structured. There is no form. It doesn't begin or end. I could offer to pay you 100 bucks to hum a specific Enya song and you (nor anyone including Enya probably) could hum it. My music theory profs called it musical masturbation. It leads to nothing positive and is pretty much just self involved. It can be relaxing but that would only add to my music theory prof's argument.

You couldn't very well hum many of Steve Reich's works, but that doesn't make them not music. (Mind, I'm not disagreeing with you about Enya, just saying that not being able to hum it doesn't make it bad music.)

New Age is just a genre, like folk or roots or ska. Most of the time, it's instrumental and meant to inspire a relaxed, peaceful mindset. Electric piano (keyboards), piano, guitar and other strings are usually involved.

If you're familiar with Native American flute, often that'll get lumped into the New Age label, too.

Just because it's called New Age doesn't make it bad, though. :) Listen to the words. As long as they're not singing about Cernunnos or Hecate or anything, listen away. [s]Heck, even if they are singing about Hecate, it's probably no big deal, but I digress.[/s]

Part of the reason I couldn't hum Reich's works is I don't know who he is. I've probably heard 20 or so Enya songs. Not one makes a lasting impression.
