kujo
politicians use double standards... more than a decade ago, conservatives attacked prez. clinton as not suitable for the presidency over the sexual scandal with lewinsky... liberals, democrats defended him saying, his personal life was no one's bizznezz.. ...today, let's turn those tables over... ...sheesh...we sure have a lot of whorin' going on in both parties.....
He was slamming Clinton for his sexual misconduct while engaging in his own bit of it himself. Some would call that an example of hypocritical behavior, while others would say that he's a "real conservative."
kujo
gingrich really knocked one out of the ballpark in last nite's debate....
It's really very ironic that a man who is facing these sort of charges is attempting to try and claim the moral high ground from a debate moderator who was simply asking him a very appropriate question given the timing and substance of the allegations. I mean, they were just made a few hours prior, and surely this was the first opportunity anyone in the press had been offered to ask him to comment on them. And he can say whatever he wants about how "inappropriate" the question is in a Presidential debate, but the fact is that the accusations are out there, and it would be remiss for the moderator to have offered him the chance to give his side of the story. Winchester
Newt is a piece of croutons. I wouldn't vote for him if he were the last fat-headed floopy on the planet. I hope he ends up homeless...in GREENLAND!

He tried to get some of them to get interviewed at ABC, but ABC wouldn't take them because they don't want him to actually be right. Actually, you're wrong. If I was saying priest as a title, then yes. However, I was referring to a specific Priest. You don't use a capital D if you say "I don't like doctors". But if you say "I don't like Doctor Howard" you do. Plus, I always use a capital P for Priests, because I feel there is a need for it. It emphasizes the importance of them. Again, that was in the nineties. If you can't give me something that's happened in the past three years, than I'm going to disregard it. I need something recent. Norseman82
The reasons I'm not the biggest fan of Newt: 1) He's on his third wife, who was once his mistress, he does marry every mistress he cheats and gets caught with. 2) He shut down the government in the 90s. You know the budget threat the GOP keeps doing that keeps sending the stock market into a tailspin and cost us our AAA credit rating due to the brinksmanship between Democrats and Republicans? He didn't back down when he did it to Clinton. 3) He is a major supporter of 3 strikes laws, one of the reasons after our draconian drug policies that we're constantly overflowing the prisons. To give an example of how ludicrous these laws can be applied, in California it is a felony to steal a pomegranate. Steal 3 pomegranates, one time each, and you're in prison for life. 4) I'm pro-life, and that means to me, being more than pro-fetus. Newt is for the death penalty. In 1994 he voted against replacing it with life imprisonment (which is cheaper btw). 5) He wants to expand our prison system, or at least he did as Speaker of the House. Currently our mass incarceration is leading a number of states into bankruptcy. 6) In 1998 he wanted to increase the penalties on drugs, as of 2002, more than 50% of all federal inmates in our overcrowded prison system are already there for drug offenses. 7) He wants to downplay multiculturalism and replace it with "patriotic education". 8) His idea to win the war in Iraq in a 2007 interview involved forcing every citizen of that nation to get a biometric ID card, set up secret military tribunals to detain and try citizens in secret like Lincoln did in the Civil War. What's to keep him from wanting to do that here? 9) He's very anti-press. Referring to it at one point as part of a triumvarate, the media-academic-legal elite. 10) He says if you're not loyal to the US, you can't serve on his Cabinet. He doesn't set out anything to say how this loyalty is determined, just makes vague rhetoric about Pakistan, Communists, and Nazis.
OK, let's go through these one by one:
1) He's on his third wife, who was once his mistress, he does marry every mistress he cheats and gets caught with.
Granted, if he's still in the race when Illinois has it's primary, my vote for him will be despite his personal life, not because of it. However, let's see who also of recent memory has been in the White House: -someone who gave an interview to a porn magazine -a divorced and remarried man -someone who didn't spay his dog -someone who was considered a draft dodger -someone who had a DUI -someone who did cocaine
2) He shut down the government in the 90s. You know the budget threat the GOP keeps doing that keeps sending the stock market into a tailspin and cost us our AAA credit rating due to the brinksmanship between Democrats and Republicans? He didn't back down when he did it to Clinton.
Valid point, but Democrats also derailed the nomination of Robert Bork because they thought he would be the vote to overturn Roe v Wade, and how many southern Democrats filibustered civil rights legislation.
OK, but the concept of "3 strikes" should still be applied for violent criminals - and that includes drug dealers.
4) I'm pro-life, and that means to me, being more than pro-fetus. Newt is for the death penalty. In 1994 he voted against replacing it with life imprisonment (which is cheaper btw).
Didn't Pope Benedict XVI (while still a cardinal) say that there could be a legitimate disagreement on the death penalty?
5) He wants to expand our prison system, or at least he did as Speaker of the House. Currently our mass incarceration is leading a number of states into bankruptcy.
Well, where are we going to put the criminals that you want to spare the death penalty?? I mean, gee, one minute you want to replace the death penalty with life imprisonment, the next you are against expanding the prison system which wouid be necessary to hold them.
6) In 1998 he wanted to increase the penalties on drugs, as of 2002, more than 50% of all federal inmates in our overcrowded prison system are already there for drug offenses.
7) He wants to downplay multiculturalism and replace it with "patriotic education".
So what's wrong with that? That is a GOOD thing. It's called CIVICS. It's called learning about your nation's history and Constitution and how the government works (or is theoretically supposed to work). Maybe if more people knew at least as much about civics as they do about "Jersey Shore" or the latest sports news du jour we'd be electing a better quality of candidates.
8) His idea to win the war in Iraq in a 2007 interview involved forcing every citizen of that nation to get a biometric ID card, set up secret military tribunals to detain and try citizens in secret like Lincoln did in the Civil War. What's to keep him from wanting to do that here?
I admit I don't know much about this point, but anything draconian would either: -not pass Congress -provoke a political backlash, including from his own party -be the subject of a court challenge -make more people take advantage of their second amendment rights
9) He's very anti-press. Referring to it at one point as part of a triumvarate, the media-academic-legal elite.
Other than his criticisms of some of the questions at the debates, I admit I don't know much about this. But many conservatives criticize the mainstream media, and many liberals criticize talk radio. Old news. (to be continued)
The overflowing prisons in the states is not due to not enough people being executed... its due to throwing too many people in jail for things that should not be illegal, or should not be punished as hard as they are, simply. there is a reason why the USA has such a large portion of its population in prison. and the lesser amount of people being thrown in jail for stuff like smoking pot, etc hasnt caused every other first world country to collapse. Lilllabettt
FuturePriest, you must be very young if you keep referring to the 90s as if they were some ancient long-ago erawith no relevance to the present day. To all: wait patiently. Mr. Gingrich will eventually mash his self-destruct button. He cannot resist, it is only a matter of time.
