Hey Brother Adam,

Something i wanted to pass on to you. I have a teacher @ my school who said he was asked to teach the RCIA program at his parish. So he agreed. And he taught the curriculam and went through the whole rite with everyone. At then end of the RCIA the parish literally thought he was the best RCIA teacher in the world but he had only taught the curriculam and done nothing special. So he was telling me and when he asked how my RCIA what the teacher was like because he said there were lots of good hearted ppl doing it but it was just that they lacked the knowledge nesscairly. Also i am under the impression that this is a widespread problem and its not just in the RCIA program but the catechumniate as a whole. For example, I was talking to this girl the otehr nite who was about to be confirmed yet didnt know what it was, or what baptism was, or what the Holy Eucharist was or why Jesus died for us etc. I literally had to go through salvation history with her. She had been attending confirmation classses for a number of months now so i was very dismayed...perhaps some of the priests and clergy here could tell us more about why this problem seems to be happening cuz to me its really beyond belief at how awful it actually is. I was lucky though i had a great monsigneur as a RCIA teacher.

Thy Geekdom Come

[quote] That is right. It would be kind of hard to memorize all 150 Psalms to read along with those monks that could read during prayer so they formed the rosary.

You'd be surprised how easy it is, actually. Seminarians have to pray like the monks do, as well (we don't chat at my school, but otherwise)...

If you start to use those breviaries that I told you about, particularly the four-volume, you should pick them up quickly. All but eight (I think) are in there...those eight the Church thought might be too violent to be read without misunderstanding, and so decided that catechises would be best to handle them, and not just recitation.

Sincere people with a lack of solid Catholic teaching knowledge is a problem in RCIA. In our parish, when someone gave the talk on purgatory, he got up and admitted he didn't really know anything about it and look in the Catholic Encylopedia and that didn't help him and it was almost an open forum. I did my best to explain it, but there was no ground work laid (and I wasn't a teacher so I wasn't just going to take over). I'm on the RCIA team this coming year so hopefully I will be able to help in these trouble spots. Is anyone else here an RCIA team member? I'll be going to a conference in Orlando in July - anyone else attending?

Thank you for the encouragemnt, yes a serious lack of educated Catholics is a problem. Hopefully the Lord will be able to use me to also help in some way to turn this problem around. The RCIA teacher I have does seem knowledgable in what she is teaching from the material we are using, but not a whole lot beyond that.

I think I'm going to be a sponsor at RCIA, when it begins later this year. Though my attendance is poor, and I probably wouldn't make a very good sponsor, would I?:(

Plus I don't like old people, and all the people there are old folks. :P
