Kia ora
What are sacramentals? What are some examples of sacramentals? Can non-Catholics benefit from sacramentals? I read in Wikipedia this:
Although the Catholic Church restricts the reception of the Sacraments by non-Catholics, this is not true of the sacramentals. The pious use of sacramentals by non-Catholics is permitted and even encouraged.
Is this true? If I carried around an Agnus Dei or made the sign of the Cross, it would be okay? CatherineM
It would absolutely be okay. One of the sacramentals that non-catholics often carry are rosaries, or wear a St. Christopher's medal. It has actually been a manner of evangelization for centuries. I know of missionaries who drop Miraculous Medals on the street in China hoping that people will pick them up. My mother isn't Catholic, but has carried a rosary for 70 years now. She'll probably be buried with one. We've had a dozen funerals since Christmas, and I've seen many non-Catholics at the services who stop to light candles. There is something about sacramentals that are comforting, as they should be.
