Aloysius
I found him making fun of Santorum's analogy to the Lord of the Rings pretty funny... I guess it's all in the beholder. if you really just don't get the humor and it's not your style, fine that's one thing, but it annoys me that people try to say he's not funny just because he's making fun of positions they themselves hold, and sometimes making fun of the ridiculous ways some of those positions are advanced (like when Santorum used a LOTR analogy that really didn't fit very well to express the sentiment of "let's fight them over there so we don't have to fight them over here")
homeschoolmom
I think all this criticism of Colbert is a bit holier-than-thou. we live in the world, he's likely not perfect but he's not exactly militantly trying to promote immorality. sure maybe he goes to far in his comedy sometimes, and it's likely enough that like the VAST majority of American Catholics, he's not convinced on the doctrine against contraception, but even if he were there really wouldn't be any way for him to oppose it on his comedy show, especially concerning popular opinion would be so far against it, what kind of jokes do you want him to do about it? seriously.
I'm glad you left yourself some wiggle room here, Al.

Aloysius
lol sometimes I think L_D might be an alternate screen name I created just to pipe up and agree with me yes, I must always leave wiggle room for the unlikely possibility that Stephen Colbert is, in fact, perfect. lol
Socrates
I feel like much of his support comes from people who love MSNBC's prime time and get a smug sense of satisfaction at how stupid (in their view) conservatives are
That was exactly my impression of the show. Aloysius
I know a lot of conservatives who love the show, actually, and are able to poke fun of themselves and liberals at the same time while watching it.
And some liberals (such as Hasan) don't find the show all that hilarious either. I just don't find it all that funny. Is it possible that people can not find Colbert hilarious or brilliant without it meaning they don't understand the humor or are unable to laugh at themselves. I've seen funny stuff by liberals as well as lame non-political and conservative humor. Humor of any kind is extremely subjective. I "get" Colbert's act; I just don't find it that funny. On another note, I somehow doubt that a show similarly mocking liberals would make in on the air.

But I guess another thing that seemed non-funny to me was the degeneration into nonsense. Jokes that trail off rather than have punch lines are less satisfying to me - I hate the ending of Monty Python's Holy Grail. Of course Colbert loves LotR, and would jump on any chance to bring it up on his show. I get that. But that doesn't mean I want to watch him play with a cave troll figure. Adrestia
I think it's great that a Catholic can laugh at his Catholicism. One thing about Muslims is that they don't seem to have any sense of humour about themselves. There are funny things about religion and it's healthy IMO to be able to laugh at the funny things, while still holding sacred those things that are sacred.
Normal Muslims do have a sense of humor about their religion (by normal I mean my Muslim friends). Like us, they are afraid of the extremists. An extremist Muslim would justified killing a normal Muslim for mocking their faith, no matter how funny.

MithLuin
Well, of course, because it's a let down! But even once you know what it is, so it's not a 'surprise' ending any more, it's still a deeply disappointing one. I also do not find Saturday Night Live to be funny. Granted, I have not watched it that many times. But the few times I did watch it, it was merely...tedious. Parody and satire just don't do much for me. Now....Princess Bride, Mel Brooks....that's funny! Captain Jack Sparrow is funny (not all the time, of course, but often). Clever banter and some slapstick works for me - I find it humorous.
