He has a few funny moments, but not enough for me to spend half an hour of my day watching :/

At least he is funnier than Stewart ^_^

Isn't he known for supporting contraception and making dirty jokes? He and Jane Fonda flirted and kissed on at least one episode (despite that he's married to another woman.) I didn't see the whole clip, but he did once appear to make fun of the sacrament of confession.

Some of the things I have heard on his show have been very much in support immoral acts, if he is a faithful Catholic he needs to rethink his public witness.

From what I've seem he acts cavalier towards the Faith and irreverent. I don't remember how may times he took the Lords name in vain in his Catholicism contest with Jack White, but it was enough for me to never let a guy like that teach CCD to my kids, but of course it's all satire and humor so it's okay.

Well, he's definitely Catholic, but from what I've seen, his faith is not his top priority in life. I think he's funny though.

Not to start a debate. It looks like we all are judging the man by his TV persona not him. Yes he can be slightly irreverant at times, But so were all the Blogger and Writers at the Register this past Fool's day. I do not theink one bit the Steven on screen is the Steven in the Chapel or the CCD classroom.

I think its funny how this debate about the faithfulness of Colbert has gone on and on and on.... and no one had anything to go on except his satirical character and now we might FINALLY have someone with some actual first hand knowledge...

I agree. :hijack: I say we merely state our Enjoyment or lack there of towards his Satire,

There is a Catholic on Comedy Central who is, at least in small ways, showing people faith. It's more of the Gospel than some people will ever get.

I like him. And his liturgical dance.

I think all this criticism of Colbert is a bit holier-than-thou. we live in the world, he's likely not perfect but he's not exactly militantly trying to promote immorality. sure maybe he goes to far in his comedy sometimes, and it's likely enough that like the VAST majority of American Catholics, he's not convinced on the doctrine against contraception, but even if he were there really wouldn't be any way for him to oppose it on his comedy show, especially concerning popular opinion would be so far against it, what kind of jokes do you want him to do about it? seriously.

With regards to the thread title, I completely agree.

Some years back I rented the first season of the show on Netflix just to see what all the fuss was about, and was frankly disappointed. Mostly lame and boring.

From what I've seen of his show, he usually uses the Catholic Faith as a form of mocking humor to get laughs (in a "those stupid conservative Catholics who take all that stuff literally" kind of way).

From an "out-of-character" interview I read posted on here, he seems like more of cafeteria liberal Catholic (sadly prevalent in modern America).

It doesnt seem to matter how much you say that his show is entirely satire, seems enough people here dont really know what that means.

Its like if Socrates were to start up a comedy TV show where he plays a liberal unwed mother of 3...

I thought it was funny, the point was how many times he mentioned that issue. think about it, there is no organized political movement getting the partial birth abortion ban overturned, he's just making fun of how much Santorum mentioned that issue. people take themselves far too seriously, even on issues that are serious we shouldn't take ourselves so seriously.

Now that might actually be funny!

And yes, most of us understand that the show is intended as comedy or "satire" (though I think that word would give undue dignity to his mostly sophomoric mockery). We just don't find it all that funny. My wife doesn't find The Big Lebowski all that funny either, though she understands it's comedy. Same difference,

I feel like much of his support comes from people who love MSNBC's prime time and get a smug sense of satisfaction at how stupid (in their view) conservatives are. He can be clever. I just think he's constrained by the audience he has to play to. And his lambasting of Bush at the corespondents dinner was truly cringe-worthy.
