Entry-Level Jobs (Hs Diploma), Especially In Medical

Hello,

I've been talking with a career counsellor through phatmass and thinking about what would be good to go into, that I would enjoy and would pay enough to support myself, like $15/hour+, M-F, 8-4 or 9-5.

I currently have demands where I couldn't work full-time yet, but I'm thinking about the future.

I'm still unsure of what it would be, but some things that caught my eye were: P.O. Mail sorter, Library assistant, and ESPECIALLY Medical Records Clerk/Analyst for a hospital or similar.

Do y'all have any ideas of what's involved in these jobs, and have any other jobs you can think of?

God bless you.

I have been a library assistant and my best friend worked for Royal Mail last winter so similar to the work you are looking at. However these and anything similar would, over here, be minimum wage £6.08. I dont know what the US min wage is but ours works out as $9.38. Unless your min is higher, Id be suprised if the jobs paid higher, sadly.

Clicking through most of the first page of results for that though, most have a Bachelors degree as a requirement, or "desired". Which means they'd probably throw people with degrees to the top of the pile.

I once looked into being a library assistant at the Library of Congress, but was told my Masters wasn't in the proper field to even apply. :|

Library assistant doesn' t require any specialized training - at least not in the form of a degree - but I think many medical records jobs do require specilaized training.

Now, if you're just do data entry with medical records, that might be different - for that, you might need simply to demonstrate you typing speed & accuracy.

Hmmm... my typing needs work. I noticed one opening in my area said they want a year of experience in clerical or records. I wonder if my experience in volunteering in a library and office would be equiv? Or maybe I could try volunteering in a records dept?

Wow, okay, pay is obviously significantly higher over there for basic jobs, so hopefully you will be able to get a flat soon.

When I was a library assistant most of the work was checking books in and out, making sure the stock lists were up to date and books were in order on the shelves. A number of times a day I'd have a wander and replace books that had been moved. We also had a map ordering system so would help people who wanted to order those, then send the order through to the central storage unit. A similar process was followed for books being ordered in from other libraries.

When we got inernet access I would make sure they all come on properly, supervise the users (esp as this was when most adults had very few computer skills) and help when they had problems.

It was an okay job, a couple of my school friends were there at the same time.

I like what you describe.... that sounds like something I could do very well. :)

I also love working around medical info, so I'm wondering about MR clerk..... :idontknow:

You could consider becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant. Many of those programs are only several months to 1 year, and make a decent salary. You'd also be able to work with people.

It's important to find a reputable program, though. I've heard some of the ones that advertise on TV are basically a scam. It's probably best to contact your local community college to see if they have a program.

I don't think CNA would work out.... I heard some disgusting stuff a CNA had to do with a man that had STD's..... I just don't feel comfortable in that sort of field, doing hands-on work like that.

They mention it's physically demanding and frustrating...

dental hygienist . I think if I could go back and do it again, I'd think about doing that. A lot of the community college programs have waiting lists - and its a relatively expensive degree - you have to buy your own equipment to "learn" on.

Downside: it can be hard on your body/hands, and you have to put your fingers inside people's mouths.

The hours are flexible though (part-time if you choose), there are a lot of openings (depending where you live, but generally, a lot) and the pay for a 2 year degree is great. Around here they make $25/hr fresh out of school, 40 grand a year to start, easy. That's more than I make now with my 4 year degree.

generally, starting positions in construction or any of the trades start around 15 per hour here... but for non physical work, not a chance.

Here is a link that describes the job. http://www.healthcaresalaryonline.com/medical-records-clerk-job-description.html

Unfortunately, it seems to indicate that while the job has no formal certification requirements (although it says that varies by state) it seems that the preference is for those with a two year degree who've passed a certain test. So while you technically are eligible for the job, it seems that they are more likely to give the job to someone with these qualifications. Anyway, I hope this helps.

Construction? I'm a thin-framed, low-muscle, female. I don't think that would work. Plus I have some health conditions that limit my exertion level. :hehe:

Hmmm.... checked indeed for my state and there aren't any basic openings for library assistant, but there are some for medical file clerk.
