Byzantine
Have you considered the Priestly Discernment Program at all? I realize you are Byzantine Rite, so things are obviously different, but you are still discerning the priesthood, and it might not be a bad idea to look into that. I would, but you have to live on campus... I plan to commute. Also, do you realize that 30 credits is 4 short of a major? It's highly recommended that those considering the priesthood major in philosophy, because they have to take so many philosophy credits. Additionally 12 credits of theology is required, which brings the total of required credits up to 42. Again, not even taking into account the core curriculum requirements, you've got a lot on you plate that you will need for seminary. I don't believe that you have to complete the requirements at college, but it just prolongs your time in seminary. I realize that. However, I really don't want to major in philosophy. I want to appear relevant. Our people appear to be dropping like flies. I want to leave FUS either being able to tell the kids "hey look, I've got this razzle dazzle degree (multimedia)" or I want training specifically to work with kids.
Thanks! Is it wrong to want to be in the vanguard of that army? It's not like I want to be a bishop (wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy); I just want to have a full parish. Basilisa Marie
If you're doing any kind of theology, it's super important to get some kind of catechetics or ministry classes in there too, even if you don't end up majoring with it. I didn't go to FUS, so I can't speak to them, but a theology degree is usually kinda worthless if you don't have any teaching skills. Okay, a theology degree is never worthless. But you know what I mean. That way even if you happen to discern out, you can still have some background to teach it effectively in a parish or whatever. But yes, of course he doesn't have to.
MithLuin
Yes, what Ammpax said. When considering a major, you always ask someone what they want to do after college, since some majors can be more helpful in meeting their goals. His goal...is seminary. Seminary requires 30 credit hours of philosophy (at least, that's what's been posted here; I haven't checked). Ergo....the recommendation that he major in philosophy. If that is mildly distasteful on some level, one could do a double major in philosophy and...something more 'relevant' or whatever.
scardella
Join the pre-theologate program, and major in whatever you want. If you turn out to be a non-priest, Comm would be the most likely to produce a worthwhile job that pays a living wage.
MissyP89
Communication is essential. New media is the social vehicle of choice for youth ... being familiar with that, and heck, just being a good communicator, will help your ministry immensely. Full disclosure: I have a degree and work in journalism. My concentration in college was online media.
