Right?

Everyone who has an active part at Mass should believe the same things (and be in communion with the Bishop of Rome), right? Because today I had the idea of a non-denominational, occasionally blatantly anti-Catholic carrying the Gifts defended to me.

Yeah, one who is taking an active role in the Mass should, at least outwardly and publicly, support everything Catholic, otherwise this would cause scandal. Truly a non-denom should not be taking an active role at all. Carrying the gifts is one of those sketchy areas of whether it is a true role or not (you don't need someone to process the gifts, they could be on credence table and brought to the priest by the server.) But it still sends the wrong message to the rest of the congregation. Don't know all the specifics, so I'm trying to think charitably of your situation, but I have also witnessed participation by those at Mass who were not Catholic and who had no intention of converting and were not members of a Catholic family. (Sometimes with the Offertory, a family will bring up the gifts and one of the spouses isn't Catholic).

It's also one of the reasons I tend to keep my eyes closed at Mass. If there are abuses, I don't really want to see them.

Part of the problem with the condition of people bringing up the gifts is who chooses them and what they know about the parties.

In my parish the ushers choose some people and ask them to bring up the gifts. The ushers don't necessarily know anything about the people except that perhaps the family includes cute kids.

My own take would be that the people bringing up the gifts should also be able to receive them at communion. This would exclude non-Catholics from participating. But the ushers don't question people ahead of time so non-Catholic visitors or non-Catholic family members end up participating as well.

At that point in the Mass they're bringing up plain bead and wine so it's not the end of the world. It's just unfortunate that they will not be able to receive communion later.
