"the Hobbit..." Prequel To "lord Of The Rings"

Actually...there is a loophole so that they could include a young Aragorn if they wanted to (note: I have heard nothing that suggests they're doing this, but it is a possibility and would not be out of character for Peter Jackson.) It would not be possible to ask Viggo to reprise the role, though.

Option #1: The backstory for young Aragorn in the books suggests that he should be living in Rivendell with his mother when Bilbo and the dwarves pass through. He would be a 10-year-old boy named Estel, and would not yet know that he is the heir of the Kings of Arnor and Gondor. So, there's no reason Bilbo can't stumble upon him and have a brief conversation while he is exploring Rivendell. In fact, the trailer includes a shot of Bilbo walking past Isildur's sword in the Rivendell library, so that would be a perfect opportunity to introduce Aragorn in a 'haha, nobody knows this will all be super important later' kind of way. In this scenario, Aragorn has not yet met Arwen and Elrond is the only father he knows (his own was killed when he was a 2 year old boy).

Option #2: The movies have a slightly different timescale than the books. In the books, there is a 17 year gap between Bilbo's 111th farewell birthday party and Gandalf returning with the news that Frodo's ring is the One Ring (so that Frodo is 50, not 33, during the Quest). In the movies, this time gap does not occur; it is not long after Bilbo leaves that Gandalf returns with the news (and thus a just-come-of-age Frodo sets out on the Quest). The movies also keep Aragorn's current age from the books (he tells Eowyn he's 88 in the EE of TTT), and the 60 year gap between the events of the Hobbit and the opening of LotR. Sooooo....in the movie universe, Aragorn should be a young man of 27 during the events of the Hobbit. As such, he can be a ranger with the elves of Rivendell, or he could roam further afield and meet Legolas in Mirkwood. (In the movies, it is strongly implied that Aragorn and Legolas knew one another and were good friends prior to the Council of Elrond.) It's true that he should not yet be acquainted with Gandalf, but....who knows what they will do there.

I mean, I guess they can do whatever they want, but those are the two most obvious ways to include Aragorn's character in these prequels.

Other actors who will be reprising their roles include: Ian McKellan as Gandalf, Hugo Weaving as Elrond, Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, Christopher Lee as Saruman, Andy Serkis as Gollum, Orlando Bloom as Legolas (I think), Elijah Wood as Frodo and Ian Holm as Bilbo (for brief flashback scenes only - presumably the framing device for the movie).

As a note, Bilbo is very 'Tookish', so you should see a lot of what you loved in Pippin in him. Despite Frodo being Bilbo's heir...Frodo and Bilbo are actually quite different people with completely disparate personalities. Gandalf's unique relationship with Pippin (a lot of the 'fool of a Took!' comments) speak more to his relationship with Bilbo than the more fatherly interactions he has with Frodo.

The hold-up was a lawsuit from the Tolkien family and their charity. They were supposed to receive 7.5% of the profit from the LOTR movies, but didn't. Their cut should have been around $220 million. Joan Rowling made 10% from the Harry Potter movies, so that's not out of line. They made over 6 billion worldwide on the movie and stuff like toys. They originally only gave the family 2-300,000 dollars. Not exactly good math that. They finally settled the lawsuit so that the filming could continue. Jackson wasn't sure he was going to come back either because they tried to short him on money too.

Well, yes and no.

The rights to make the Hobbit into a film were sold by Tolkien in his lifetime. They then split up and went to two different studios (one had the right to make the film, another the right to distribute it.) No big deal; one studio could sell its half to the other, or in some other way swap and make it happen. But....one of the studios in question was stuck in bankruptcy and trying to sell itself to yet another studio, and while this was all getting wrapped up, the rights to make certain movies were caught in limbo (I think the Spiderman franchise was similarly affected).

Independently of that issue was the baggage left over from the LotR movies. Apparently, 'creative accounting' is normal in Hollywood, so that studios never claim to have made any money on any film (not even a bestseller blockbuster like LotR). Therefore, they don't have to pay anyone their cut....

So, to resolve these accounting issues, it is usual for people to have to sue to get their money. BUT, while you are in the midst of resolving the lawsuit, you can't exactly sign a deal for a new movie. So, the litigation (with both the Tolkien Estate and Peter Jackson) had to be resolved before the new film could be greenlit.

So they pushed back the release date multiple times, and in the end went ahead with pre-production anyway (despite not having this all resolved) and thus spent like 3 years on pre-production. Long enough that del Toro agreed to direct, showed up, worked awhile on the films, claimed he couldn't sit around New Zealand forever twiddling his thumbs, and left. (Leaving Peter Jackson to direct.) There were probably some creative differences between the two, but del Toro's work on the film should be apparent in things like creature design (Mirkwood spiders, Smaug the dragon, etc). Certainly, his name will be credited on the film.

Filming finally began in April 2011, IIRC.

Aragon is soooooo wonderful! I adorable his epic-ness! But I don't think that he should have married the elf... but that is just me.

Are you kidding?!? I LOVE Arwen! Liv Tyler was gorgeous in the LOTR movies!

Okay I like her and the movies obviously wouldn't be the same without her, but she is not very adventurous... and Aragon is. I would how their marriage turned out. Oh BTW did you watch the behind the scenes??? Aragon has short hair and it is AWFUL. :cry4:

Chrysophylax

I am super excited about the Hobbit. My dad read all the books to us when we were younger, and we really enjoyed the Lord of the Rings movies. Isn't it great to have an all day marathon of all of the LOTR movies in expanded edition?! :) Anyway, we have been looking forward to the Hobbit since the finished the Return of the King, and I hope it will be great! A story with that many dwarves has got to be amazing! And personally, I thought they looked pretty amazing, too!
