CatherineM
Can you just imagine how expensive some of these are?
Lisa
Yeah, I've been looking for a gift for my spiritual director, who has been seeing me for free for a couple of years. I thought about a chasuble or something. Then I looked at how much the pretty ones cost, and they were all somewhere between "ouch" and "boinngggg." I will most likely be saving for a stole. CatherineM
Yeah, I've been looking for a gift for my spiritual director, who has been seeing me for free for a couple of years.
I highly recommend reconciliation stoles. No one ever buys them for priests, and good priests spend more time in them than they do in regular stoles. Most priests only have the stoles that come in their sick call kits, and they are cheap looking and very generic. I like to make them with the religious symbol or cross that speaks to the priest. The last one I made was for an older seminarian as an ordination present. He wanted an ankh cross on it. I thought that was a bit weird, but it meant something to him culturally. I suspect it was one of a kind. If you want to give one to your spiritual director, I'd be happy to make one for $10-20 depending on fabric prices. Just ask him what his favor symbol is, or something that would give him comfort while listening to confessions or visiting the sick (main reason I make sure mine are washable). As an example, Irish priests always want celtic crosses or trinity knots. One caveat. I don't do rainbows anymore.

It breaks his heart that he can't wear it anymore without giving people the wrong idea.

Especially since the rainbow has such beautiful Biblical links (Noah and the flood).
brianthephysicist
I don't see a reason why a priest can't wear a stole with a rainbow on it. Maybe not every day, but why not every now and again for joyous occasions? As a straight man, I like rainbows. When did we lose the ability to wear a rainbow for the sake of wearing a rainbow? Rainbows are awe-inspiring, beautiful, and down-right razzle dazzle.

When someone told me, I was so mad that they had stolen my rainbows. Edited January 8, 2012 by Lisa
brandelynmarie
This shows the back of a cope, not really used too often anymore.
