Iacobus
According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the Vatican, war to be just, must meet four criteria set over 1,500 years ago: (1) The aggressor must inflict grave, lasting, certain damage on one or more nations; (2) It must be a means to an end when all other options have been shown to be ineffective and/or impractical; (3) Must have real and great chance of success; (4) The methods to achieve this must be less evil and cause less disorder then the evil that is removed. Basically, war must be a last resort, caused by an attack by the aggressor, must restore order, have a good chance of success, and must be a lesser evil than no action to be considered a just war.
Let us use what we know for sure before the wars... 1. WWII: Hitler invaded Poland, Chezchsalivac, France, and the USSR. He was bombing London and had sent a [I[wolfpack or two of U-Boats to the American coast line and was killing American merchant vessels. He was killing people in agression. Japan invaded China and attacked us at Peral Habor. They killed out of agression (grave), lasting (they occupiped much of Europe and didn't intend to stop unless stoped), and damage occured to the people and buildings of Europe. Iraq: Saddam may have had WMDs, but had yet to use them after we destoryed them in '91. We know he did bad things in the early '90s but as far as we could tell that was over and we couldn't use it against him now. As he had yet to take any confrimed agression it could not be grave and lasting damge to one or more nations. 2. Appeshment and diploancy was tried before the war for years. Hitler did not invade Poland in '32. This approach failed but was tried over and over again in an effort to avoid war. Granted Bush did try with the UN, however, it was rushed and wasn't allowed to fully bloom. He did not excahust all of the options in an effort to avoid the war. 3. In WWII we knew we had the USSR and Britian on our side. With our added might, and the abilty we had to prodoce we could win the war. There was a real chance. Iraq, the US could win the war on its own but it would have been better to go in with more friends. But the Iraq war does fit this critia. 4. Some debate could be raised about the use of Atomic Weapons. However, the Nazi juggernaut was tearing up Europe and the use of convential weapons was premitted to stop this. In order to stop major insugence problems after the war the US and her allies poured Eco Aid money into Europe and helped rebuild Europe (fast) and was in touch with the people. Iraq aftermath has cost more lives than the war did. Iraqis are more scared of crime and injure now than they were under the Ba'athists. The CPA (?) is not in touch with the people. Iraqis are largly confused and angery about being confused. In the future we may have lost, by this war, the religoniously torolent secular nation of Iraq for the fundimenaitist Islmaic state. CIA world handbook has the US reading and writing rate for those over age 15 @ 97% for male and female. It has Cuba at 96.9% for female and 97.2% for males.
