Jesus_lol
funny how with this bill and NDAA, it got reddit(a typically liberalish place) thinking about the 2nd amendment in a good light.
Tony
Don't forget there are two bills, SOPA and PIPA (Protect IP) , both are pretty similar. Some company could say they are against SOPA but are secretly for PIPA
Lil Red
could you provide more information on PIPA? i'm afraid i don't know much about it or how it's different from SOPA.

arfink
if you've already called your congressmen/senators then the next step is to technologically prepare yourself for the worst. If you have a domain hosted by GoDaddy then you need to find a new DNS host, as GoDaddy is suspected to be one of the biggest SOPA/PIPA supporters out there. They have already been known to "accidentally" pull entire domains at the whim of copyright lawyers (no judges were involved) and have been able to get away with it in the past by playing stupid. Second, if you don't already have such a thing, find a plugin for your browser that will be able to route around compromised DNS servers. Currently available options include Mafiaafire and DeSopa. These plugins are very simple, and basically do the job of a DNS for you, by automatically converting www.blockedwebsite.com into an IP address. New tools will probably be released which will work better than this. Planned features include the ability to automatically extend your personal DNS database by adding IP addresses to it as you browse. Third, if you really don't want such a tool installed in your browser for some reason you can also change what DNS server your browser will attempt to get DNS information from. This is a bit trickier, but anyone who has done VPN setup before will be able to do this. Make sure you pick a DNS provider you can trust. I currently trust Google's DNS service, but it's unknown at this time if Google would continue to operate it's DNS service if a law like SOPA or PIPA got passed. BG45
Thanks Arfink! Also, Reddit has announced it will be blacking out its website for 12 hours on January 18th to protest SOPA:
The freedom, innovation, and economic opportunity that the Internet enables is in jeopardy. Congress is considering legislation that will dramatically change your Internet experience and put an end to reddit and many other sites you use everyday. Internet experts, organizations, companies, entrepreneurs, legal experts, journalists, and individuals have repeatedly expressed how dangerous this bill is. If we do nothing, Congress will likely pass the Protect IP Act (in the Senate) or the Stop Online Piracy Act (in the House), and then the President will probably sign it into law. There are powerful forces trying to censor the Internet, and a few months ago many people thought this legislation would surely pass. However, there’s a new hope that we can defeat this dangerous legislation. We’ve seen some amazing activism organized by redditors at /r/sopa and across the reddit community at large. You have made a difference in this fight; and as we near the next stage, and after much thought, talking with experts, and hearing the overwhelming voices from the reddit community, we have decided that we will be blacking out reddit on January 18th from 8am–8pm EST (1300–0100 UTC). Instead of the normal glorious, user-curated chaos of reddit, we will be displaying a simple message about how the PIPA/SOPA legislation would shut down sites like reddit, link to resources to learn more, and suggest ways to take action. We will showcase the live video stream of the House hearing where Internet entrepreneurs and technical experts (including reddit co-founder Alexis “kn0thing†Ohanian) will be testifying. We will also spotlight community initiatives like meetups to visit Congressional offices, campaigns to contact companies supporting PIPA/SOPA, and other tactics. We’re as addicted to reddit as the rest of you. Many of you stand with us against PIPA/SOPA, but we know support for a blackout isn’t unanimous. We're not taking this action lightly. We wouldn’t do this if we didn’t believe this legislation and the forces behind it were a serious threat to reddit and the Internet as we know it. Blacking out reddit is a hard choice, but we feel focusing on a day of action is the best way we can amplify the voice of the community. As we have seen yet again in the fight against PIPA/SOPA, the best ideas come from our community. We all have just over a week to figure out exactly what to do with our extra cycles on January 18th. Please join us in the discussion in the comments here and in /r/SOPA. — the reddit team
BG45
Forbes has posted about Reddit's SOPA blackout and is calling on Google and Facebook to put their money where their mouth is. Forbes acknowledges that while Reddit pulls in 2 billion pageviews a month, it's nothing compared to those titans, and it's preaching mainly to its tech savvy choir. A group of tech industry experts has been called to testify later this month in DC by Congress about the bill, among them Reddit's co-founder, who fully intends to state his position that this and PIPA will destroy the internet as we know and use it. Where Forbes and I differ in this article, is their opinion that Obama would veto SOPA, since he's hinted he would before. He said he'd veto NDAA, it was signed. He said he'd close Guantanomo, it's still open. He said he'd make immigration reform more positive for immigrants, in three years he has deported more people than Bush did in eight. He said he'd step down the drone wars, because it antogonizes our allies and has expanded drone strikes into their territory.
Tony
without changing the subject too much (And Im no supporter of Obama). Wasn't there enough votes for NDAA to override a veto? Same could happen with SOPA/PIPA
BG45
Honestly dunno if there was or not. And if so, I hope that's not the case on SOPA/PIPA. I'm hoping the tech industry reps or blackouts could help change Congress's minds...
BG45
Craigslist has devoted a section of their front page to informing its users how SOPA would be detrimental to the internet. Just linked to Pittsburgh, but any city you choose has the same anti-SOPA message.
