SoylentGreene
Is it just that one scene then?
Jesus_lol
well, two, but only one is really bad. the whole movie is about catching a murderous rapist, so i wouldn't go to the theaters expecting The Emperors New Groove.

fides' Jack
... so i wouldn't go to the theaters expecting The Emperors New Groove.
Yet another inappropriate movie... Seriously speaking, I'm getting more and more dead-set against movies with objectionable content. Cursing is a big no-no. Pornographic scenes are an even bigger no-no. Using God's name in vain is the biggest no-no yet. I think if a story can't be told without a scene of perverted violence (such as a rape), then the story doesn't need to be told. It's like the old saying, "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." I'm not dead-set against violence. I don't think violence is by nature sinful. But I do think it can easily become so. Cursing is by nature sinful. As are pornographic scenes. I don't agree with the argument that it depends on the person. Some have said that if a person is mature enough, then watching a movie with objectionable content could be okay. I think if a person is that mature, then he/she won't care to watch the movie anyway. We are all fallen and have to deal with concupiscence constantly. Even just hearing a curse word, or reading it on a screen (if the tv is muted) is enough for that word to stay in our memory. The same with pornographic material. It may not affect you now, but it can't possibly be good for you, and nobody knows how anything will affect them in the future. Therefore, to knowingly watch something with content described above is putting yourself in a near occasion of sin, no matter how mature you think you are. As far as the Augustine argument goes, I think that's hogwash, too. I can't think of a single instance in which a movie would lose meaning if they took out the sex scenes. Certainly, a movie could give due credit to St. Augustine without visually displaying the sins he engaged in in his youth. He didn't describe those sins in his Confessions, why would we need to describe them in a movie? Finally, even if I'm wrong, and a person out there who is mature enough to handle it watches a movie with some objectionable scene in it, and the scene was vital to the plot, that person can't control who else might see the movie. Even if he lived all alone, there still exists a chance (however remote) that somebody might barge into the room uninvited, and might see the scene, and be impacted by it. I think where I'm going with this is just the fact that nobody here knows for sure just how moral or immoral watching such a movie could be (only God knows such things). But I think we can all agree that it is never immoral to refrain from watching it.
fides' Jack
Addition: I also don't think it comes down to whether or not an act is sinful - for it to be displayed in a movie. But there are some sins that men by nature struggle with. I don't think there is any way to make the act of sexual intercourse acceptable to watch in a movie. But I do think that violence can be portrayed decently (such as in The Passion).
Cherie
More and more I find myself agreeing with Jack on this issue. Especially now that I am a mother. Movies are extremely influential, for good... But also for evil. More and more my husband and I are staying away from anything with objectionable content, particularly in the realm of sexuality. Would I feel comfortable watching it with Jesus? That's my criteria, anyway.
SoylentGreene
Thanks everyone for the input. I've decided that I'm not going to watch it. Its not something that glorifies God in any way, and that should be my standard. Thanks and peace!
