Well I just wrote the check for the down payment on the condo upstairs. Austin got the weirdo who lives there to agree to a price we can afford and sign the contracts. I'm not going to breath easy until he actually moves out but this way we will have a secure base for our new son.

As the grapevine at church has lit up about our taking Zack, people are just stunned. People who have lived here their whole lives and have known his family forever have been telling me stories that are really shocking. I thought people would think we shouldn't have interfered, but they have all been delighted and thankful that we intervened. That support has been huge because this has all been stressful.

 i am so glad. I hope they are all keeping you in their prayers, for spiritual support as well. Place you, austin and zack on the parish's prayer chain. you all need it.

I'm so proud. My little duckling got promoted in the cadets tonight to lance corporal. I love sewing stripes on uniforms.

This just made my night! I'm sure Zack must be so excited, I remember you said he was working really hard to get promoted.

Today is his mom's birthday, so we were worried about a breakdown. His family is having a big party and going to the cemetery, etc. We went by to drop some paperwork copies off with his dad, and he seemed to be doing okay. So did his dad. He was still sober, and had put some weight on, and seemed in really good spirits. Everyone who sees Zack talks about how happy he seems. That makes us feel like we are doing something right.

After mass downstairs we were talking about starting the fund-raising to send kids to World Youth Day in Rio. I wish I could have taken a picture of Zack's face when I made sure he was the first kid on the list. I told him I'd make sure he went even it I had to sell trinkets on the street corner. I grew up poor. I know that feeling that you can't even ask for something or aspire to do something because you know there's no money for it. It's 3000 dollars for a once in a lifetime trip. Cheap in the scheme of things.

We have all the paperwork signed for the purchase of the condo upstairs. We have the bank draft coming on Tuesday. The mortgage has all been approved. All we have left is to actually get the guy to move out. After that, we have to fix the plumbing in the shower. We have a plumber at church that is going to handle it. He's 74 years old, and can't drag his tools and torches up 3 flights of stairs, so Zack is going to do the grunt work, and he's going to get to watch and learn how to fix stuff. That's how I learned to do stuff. We have scouted out flooring at the Habitat for Humanity store. I'll be the brains and supervision, and Zack and his best friend will do the kneeling, hauling and learning. He's eventually going to own the condo outright, so I want him to know how to do all his own maintenance.

The funniest thing this week is that his gym teacher wants him to try out for the football team. He's tall, fast and can jump really high, so I think he'd make a great wide receiver or cornerback. Canadian football has really wide fields, and only 3 downs, so passing is king. I have memories of sitting in my wheelchair with a catcher's mask and glove hitting grounders to my little leaguer. The arm rests on the chair looked like they had been in a hail storm. Now I guess I'm going to be throwing passing patterns down the alley. My mom once told me that having kids late in life kept her young. I'm hoping for the same.

Serenity Now! Serenity Now!!!!

We have been trying for two months to get Zack's orphan benefits started. We fill out the federal forms and they send them back. First time because they wanted his dad to sign, and then they wanted us to sign, etc. This time they wanted our address instead of Zack's. Finally my husband called his member of parliament, the Canadian equivalent of a congressman but they actually help with government carp.

Anyway his assistant that helped with all my immigration mess looked into what was going on. He found out that the reason we are getting the run around is that one of his sisters is getting his orphan benefits and has been all along. This was aided by the nun at Catholic Charities. When our paperwork goes through they ask the sister for proof she has custody and the nun vouches for it as a social worker. So they send our paperwork back to ask for more information.

The ironic thing, is that if I was to file charges against this beloved nun with the social workers, Austin would be on the hearing tribunal because he is the public member of the College of Social Workers. He'd recuse himself of course, but still.

Good grief. That's a load of horse poo. Prayers it all gets sorted out quickly and Zack actually gets his due benefits!

Catherine, I haven't been on Open Mic for quite a while, so this whole saga is new to me. God himself will be your reward. You, Austin, and Zack will be going on our prayer board in the morning.
