Or something like that. It sure looks grey in here. :|

Indeed, it does. LOL
Perhaps this is where the 'obedience' kicks in?

It was either that or "The Temple Whippers"

The issue is obviously not that they are using "Catholic" in their name. The bishop could grant them permission to use the word "Catholic" if he wanted to. The bishop seems like he doesn't want to do this, for whatever reason. I side with bishops.

Ash Wednesday

I think regardless of how people feel about Voris (my feelings are mixed, I haven't seen enough of him to draw a full conclusion) but I think it's important to avoid the cult of personality about any particular person or organization-- generally when this has gone on in the Church in recent times, it has not ended well. Then again, when does it ever...

He's critical of bishops quite often. I think that probably has a big part in this
OK, then I don't think he should label his organization as Catholic then.
He should call it "RealOpinionTV", or something.
I don't think any Catholic who takes on a leadership or teaching role should be publicly and openly critical of bishops.

I can see the logo now.... A giant Mary's foot, complete with pink high heels.... ;)

Well, there's "critical of bishops" like saying "such and such bishop is clearly not in league with Rome" (for example, that one bishop in Australia that the Pope had to personally remove) which I would say is OK, as opposed to "critical of bishops" in which you say things like "Such and such bishop didn't instantly excommunicate those priests wearing rainbow colored stoles the other day!" which I would say is not OK.

Im personally not a big fan, I find his work extracts the urine far more than I am comfortable with. However I would think tha dropping the C to a c would be at least a start - there are non-Catholic groups who are catholic as in orthodox (without being Orthodox)

I have a strange love for Voris and I can't believe that they are doing this to him. From what I understand, he is not teaching heresy :P And he is just a little intense and passionate about his more traditional beliefs. I just don't get it.

I am not the least bit surprised. If you try to start up something 'on your own' and call it Catholic, the diocese is going to get on your case about it. I've seen this happen to independent Catholic schools - if they are not sponsored by the diocese or a religious order, and are just a start up trying to be...Catholic...then they can't call themselves a Catholic school. If they are a legit group, they respect their bishop and do not use the word 'Catholic' in the name, but rather include it in the description of the school being 'in the Catholic tradition' or something like that. If, after a number of years go by, the bishop decides to revisit that decision, he could decide to recognize them as a Catholic school and allow them to use the title. But the general rule is that you *don't* get permission up front.

This is not an example of the diocese targeting Varis or trying to shut him down, but rather standard operating procedure. It is something the Church does to protect the word 'Catholic' and not let just anyone say they are representing the Church. The same thing would apply to any layman starting up their own school/media/retreat center/prayer group/nonprofit, etc. You can't name your organization 'Catholic' without the permission of the Church via the local bishop.

The fact that this is being announced by the diocese publicly (rather than remaining a standard private communication), suggests that there is friction between Varis/RealCatholicTV and the Detroit diocese/bishop. Hopefully this will be resolved in a way that does not leave any bad blood.

I think the Vatican should request the domain name "catholic.com" from Catholic Answers.

Actually, if I was Catholic Answers, I would redirect catholic.com to the vatican site and just use catholicanswers.com.

But, with that said, I do think people who go to catholic.com looking for the church are actually going to a great site anyway.
