'harry Potter And Yoga Are Evil', Says Catholic Church Exorcis

I do think this is open for discussion, since it's not an official pronouncement of the Church. His experience as a very experienced exorcist shouldn't be taken lightly. I have a hard time seeing how either Yoga or Potter are intrinsically evil (in fact, I'm sure they're not). And something could have been lost in translation -- you never know. I am pretty sure Father Amorth normally publishes in Italian. However, I am open to the argument that both Yoga and Harry Potter are dangerous for vulnerable minds. I do Yoga, and I might read HP one day, but I'm not in a state in my life to be persuaded into a false religion by something as trivial as yoga or children's books. I also think that a lot depends on what kind of yoga you do. I do one that is not religious at all. Are a lot of the instructors Hindu? Probably. Are the poses tributes to Hindu gods? Maybe, but that is never mentioned in class, and I make a point of taking advantage of the complete silence in yoga to talk to my God. I would say that if anything, the yoga I do has brought me closer to God, but I'm aware that not all forms of yoga are probably as conducive to that as what I do.

Fr. Mitch Pacwa from EWTN once talked about Yoga. He said that he didn't like it, but not because he thought it was Satanic.

He didn't like it, because everyone seemed to claim that it would bring "inner peace". When he tried it, he said that it didn't do that, and the only true way in which he could find "inner peace" was in silent prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. He said that it should not take the place of Christ in our lives. Or something to that effect.

Just thought I'd share this. :)

As far as Harry Potter, I think they are pretty stupid. Id rather read George R. R. Martin... :P
If we go too far down this route, we end up at the Index of Forbidden Books. Many voices in the Church were raised in support of that. Had you been alive at the time when people were being denounced to the Inquisition for reading texts that most of us would class as perfectly innocuous, would you have upheld the judgment of the people who had banned these books on the grounds that they must know more about evil than you?
There's a difference between avoid and ban. Discernment is necessary. A friend of mine got involved in the occult and his life got really messed up. I would not have believed these things, had it not happened to my friend. The spirit world is very real. There are reasons why we are asked to avoid it.

My problem with yoga is that I am fat and lazy. My problem with Harry Potter is that there are far far better, more interesting things to be reading.

Basilisa Marie

I think one thing the media forgets is that the Church has to take care of all kinds of souls, and that means that some priests are going to be much more sensitive to "bad influences" and demonic activity. I've never once spoken with someone who was turned away from Christianity by reading Harry Potter. Rowling has said that she intended Harry to be a kind of Christological figure. That being said, if someone doesn't know anything about the occult and has a problem distinguishing fiction from reality, I can definitely see how the books can spark an interest in some nasty stuff, theoretically speaking. But so could many other books. Sure, there are plenty of things to read that are much better, both as literature and better for one's spiritual growth. If you like Potter for its themes of self sacrifice and the triumph of love, then that's fine. If you think it's a boring kids' story, that's fine too.

As far as yoga goes, my understanding is that there's nothing inherently wrong with doing the movements as a form of exercise. The problem seems to be that it's fairly easy to get into the spiritual side of yoga, if one takes it too seriously. If someone's worried about getting drawn in, Pilates might be a better alternative, because those are based on the physical side, where the mind controls the body through concentration and precise movements. It's got a lot less to do with "energies" and whatever is in the spiritual baggage of yoga.

aaaand you just jumped up a few notches higher in my book :P George RR Martin, Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson... those are all really good books, of a depth that harry potter goes no where near. Not that harry potter is bad, but it is simply on a different level.

God i would love to have a discussion on morals and themes in Robert Jordan's "The Wheel of Time"

Yoga is to touchy feely for me. My inner self is doing fine I don't need to be touching bases with it! . . . and Harry Potter?

Harry Potter is against Yoga. He is on record for saying Yoga is anti-witchery.

Harry Potter doesn't have an opinion. He is not real. :twitch:
