Road Tripping On A Budget

I have slept on a deserted beach, gone on a backpacking trip, and taken a long bus trip to no where, all for minimal money. I used to like going to a city I'd never been to before, and I'd sleep in my car and spend the week prowling used book stores and thrift stores for theology books. One time I got cold and slept at a homeless shelter. Camping can be cheap in the off season because they rarely bother with getting fees from you. Public golf courses in winter or cemeteries are also cheap places to sleep when money is tight. A sleeping bag in a sand trap is very comfortable, and often quite warm as the sand holds heat from the sun. Tennis courts are also warm at night.

Although the Wife isn't keen on camping, that is a great way to cut costs. Otherwise the trips we have taken we planned our routes found cheapest hotels. or bounced around family (we like to spend time with family) and did small day trips to where we wanted to go. We did a lot of traveling with snacks and drinks often curbed appetites so we can travel towards our destination with minimal stops. Buy in bulk from a grocery store don't buy things at gas stations.

This is a daily thing for us but if you go out or even cook, allow for leftovers, that's your lunch.

I don't think I'm as brave as you are.

Anyone have stories of how they pulled off a vacation on a budget? I'm in dire need of one...

-stay with family if able
-pack a cooler of items bought cheaply at grocery stores
-plan ahead - this can be as simple as looking up inexpensive things to do in a city you are traveling to.

Well, you'd be surprised how quiet cemeteries are at night. The ground is soft, there is access to water, and it is very level for tenting. It can be a bit windy, but I always picked a spot near shrubbery. The neighbors are also quiet.

i dont know if i would feel comfortable about camping in cemetery. how does that fall with respect to the dead

I think that would depend on your intention. If you made a point to visit the graves and pray for them while you were there, I don't know if there would be a problem with regard to respect. But you raise a good question.

lol, the running family joke was that my mom made road trips (with my dad) to visit dead people, not the living. :hehe: "oh, mom's gotta go visit some dead people!" :hehe: (she was really into genealogy and it's amazing what information you can glean from cemeteries!)

In regards to "respect for the dead", you have to remember that before public parks, people would oftentimes go to cemeteries for their afternoon stroll or for a picnic. It's only in the past century that we've taken on this ultra-scrupulous tendency towards cemeteries.
