I can't even begin to discuss my feelings on this. What the heck?!

Well, for one thing, Nuns do go see doctors, so how about we let their doctors decide what sort of medication they need to be on?

^ That. There's no sin if it's taken as a medication. But a nun's doctor would decide that. (I'd just give it props but I'm out for the day.)

Exactly. The article made it seem like everyone should be on the pill.

Edited to add: And why is this considered news? I'm very confused.

It's considered news because it appears to show some sort of contradiction in Catholic teaching, and it's always such great fun to catch those dang mackerel snappers in a lie!

I also like how there is not a consideration for if the nuns are concerned about having a higher risk of certain types of cancer (and how they ignored until the last paragraph that it could increase the risk of other types of cancers).

"appears to show" is the key phrase there... this is definitely not news for any nuns I know. There really is no contradiction.

There is a very interesting paradox though in that the pill can be morally taken if one is not having sex and it is being used for a medical reason... the opposite of the reason it is often marketed.

Can we somehow productively combine this thread with the Welfare & Brith Control thread in the Debate Table?

Nuns on welfare AND birth control, maybe?

How about we spare the nuns another battle tonight, lol :sos:

I for one found this article very offensive. First off, it's medically inaccurate. The pill is not a miracle drug that is worth taking to prevent cancer and treat other problems when the pill itself causes cancer. Secondly, I believe that this was put in the news because there has been a lot of hype about contraception the past couple of days. Today there was a big stink about regulations on Plan B, and yesterday a study reported some new and horrifying side-effects of YAZ (i.e., suicide and blindness). I wouldn't be surprised if this article was some NOW member's idea to cover the asses of the anti-life industry.

Also, did you notice that the data cited BEGAN at age 70... and 80... ... I come frome a family where 3/4 of my grandparents died before 60 so 70 seems doing good and 80 just plain amazing. hah.

But I did find it strange that no data on women who were age 30-60 was used.

Also, the women who ARE in that study and on the pill, weren't they on the pill for other reasons than preventing cancer specifically. Because I would think that if breast, uterine, cervical, etc. cancers are partly caused/aided/whatever by an imbalance/incorrect hormone levels, that correcting the hormones (through the BC) would also correct whatever would have caused the cancer? I could be all wrong here, and I REALLY don't know medical terms, but if that is the case, it would make sense why they would say that bc "prevents" cancer.
