Easter Vigil And Midnight Mass?

Recommended Posts

So I have a Catholic friend and we were talking about Holy Days of Obligation and regular Sunday Obligation etc..

We both agreed that normally, going to Mass the night before counted for the next day (obvious example: Sat night mass for Sunday). However, she seemed to think that is the Mass was different the night before (ex. Midnight Mass, Easter Vigil) that it DOES NOT count for the actual day since those Masses are different. Is this true???

Can. 1248 §1. A person who assists at a Mass celebrated anywhere in a Catholic rite either on the feast day itself or in the evening of the preceding day satisfies the obligation of participating in the Mass.

Christmas is one of those feasts as well as the Easter Vigil that actually has a vigil mass. There are even separate readings for the vigil, but I know of no church that would have a mass on Christmas eve that would not count for Christmas. There are also provisions to have the readings of the vigil replaced by the readings of midnight as we do in this parish. The other Masses dawn, morning and day must use the prayers and readings appropriate to the time of day.
