MithLuin
Mostly over sex - homosexuality, condoms, celibacy...pedophiles. The predictable topics, I suppose. But of course his complaint against the Church goes far deeper than that. He likes the enlightenment. He dislikes people telling him he's a sinner. And he's very much opposed to dogma (the entire concept) - the idea that someone can tell you what the truth is. His litany of complaints are common ones - Galileo, burning people at the stake, not giving away the Church's treasures. I am not posting this here so that people can rebut those points; I'm pretty sure we all know the flaws in his argument. I'm sharing it with people in a 'know what others are saying about you' way. I hope it's not too depressing...but please do not click these links if you don't want to hear someone bashing the Catholic Church. OnlySunshine
He is an idiot and always will be as long as he publicly embarrasses himself. We know what we are about and we don't need some guy telling everyone what his misconstrued ideas are. Quite frankly, they are so unoriginal. It really is a shame, though. I love watching old episodes of "A Bit of Fry and Laurie." Edited November 25, 2011 by MaterMisericordiae

[/quote] That's what I used to think about him as well -- that it was his whole premise for spouting insanities against the Church. But people really do get some cockamamie ideas and they usually come from other influences. It's somewhat like a game of "Telephone." The story is bent and twisted until it is barely recognizable. Guest
On a more humble and honest response i think a lot of what he said makes sense and it troubles me. A few years ago I would be asking a bunch of why why why's. Why is More a saint when he burned people who read the Bible. Why this why that. Now I really don't care though and I just trust and have faith. It is what it is. Salute and fall in or be slain. Heaven or hell. Life or death. So on and so on. AccountDeleted
Actually, I think he is a very intelligent man who has many concerns about the Church and some of them are valid. I was raised agnostic/atheist and I understand where he is coming from, so I won't condemn him for trying to find answers in a secular world. The thing he lacks however, is the gift of faith, which was given to me for God only knows the reason why, and for which I will be eternally (literally) grateful. I admire this man for speaking his mind and his heart, however wrong he may be about many things, essential things, but I don't condemn him for saying what he believes to be true. Rather, I will pray for him and ask that others pray for him to be 'enlightened' in a way that he has yet to even imagine - not the enlightenment of the intellect alone, but also of the soul. In the old days, when I was one myself, I would have called Stephen Fry a 'seeker of truth'. Many other very well known and intelligent people have been given the gift of faith and then realised what they had lacked before - one of them was C.S. Lewis. Don't condemn a man for living in the dark - show him the light. To convert a person to Christianity, become a Christian. I don't think that name calling is the way to help someone find the love of God. Yes, he is wrong, but even Jesus told Pilate that he was not as much to blame as those who handed him over, because they knew better. Ignorance may not be an excuse in the law, but I am sure that God's mercy extends to those who are seeking Truth, even if they have not yet found it. Blessed&Grateful
People need to justify their beliefs and that usually includes "taking down" those whose opinions vary from theirs. I am not concerned with his opinion, nor his public decry of Catholicism. Responding to him seems to add fuel to his fire. I will put him and all others like him in God's hands. For even those whom have turned away from the Word are always welcomed back with open arms.
