KarenJoanna
Am I in mortal sin because when my aunt and uncle bought a car, the seller lied in the receipt so they would not have to pay taxes so much and i knew it was wrong but I was embarrassed to say something, but then i posted on facebook that lying on taxes was wrong and then i went with my mom to a tax agency and she lied about something and I didnt want to make her look bad, but mayeb i did wrong and i should have told the tax agent and my mom that lying in taxes was wrong of avoiding taxes because she owes a debt and doesnt want to confront it but after, I told her it was wrong and she should pay. Am I in mortal sin, or is this their responsibility and they probably know its wrong too? But did I have a responsibility of saying something? CatherineM
You are not in sin for what your relatives have done. I don't believe you have the responsibility to report them either, but I'm sure there are those who would disagree with me. There are some things that aren't as gray. If you had a relative who was abusing a child, then you would certainly sin by not reporting them. You can't participate in their transgressions though. I had a brother ask me to do his taxes once with what I knew were falsified receipts. I said no. We all have relatives who do things we don't approve of. Sometimes you have to hold your tongue in order to maintain peace in the family. Sometimes that is impossible. The older we get, the better we are able to discern between the two. Theoketos
Its a prudential decision. But CatherineM is correct. You did what you were supposed to do. It does not make what they did good. So stay out of that nonsense. Also consider 1 John 5:16,17:
If any one sees his brother committing what is not a mortal sin, he will ask, and God will give him life for those whose sin is not mortal. There is sin which is mortal; I do not say that one is to pray for that. All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin which is not mortal.
