Ivf?

Hi All, new user here. I am a Methodist, recently starting the RCIA program. My reasons for inquiry are twofold: the first is for practical reasons -- my wife is Catholic (although not practicing for some time), and my 6 month old twin daughters were baptized Catholic last Sunday, and I'm thinking that conversion will be good for my family, especially my daughters. The second reason is spiritual -- I'm looking for something further that I haven't yet found in being Methodist.

In reading the material from my RCIA class, I see that IVF goes against the sixth commandment, "Thou shall not commit adultery."

Due to prior pregnancy problems with my wife (ectopic pregancies), the only option for us was IVF. We were blessed with identical twin daughters six months ago.

My question is, how do my wife and I reconcile this with the church? I haven't yet spoken to anybody in the church nor in my RCIA class yet, but I found this forum online, and figured this would be a good place to start.

Thanks

Well, I'm not going to tell you that you have to sell your beautiful daughters to a sweat shop because they were conceived by IVF. All children, not matter how they came into the world, are gifts from God, and we love them as such. At the time you made the decision to undergo the procedure, you were Methodist, and therefore had probably never heard that there might be a moral issue with it. Being Catholic can be hard, because once you learn the truth, you have a greater responsibility to follow that path.

For your future reading, investigate GIFT (Gamete Intra-Fallopian Transfer). That is allowed by the Church. http://www.infertile.com/infertility-treatments/gift.htm
