Ipod Touch And Ipad

Hello,

I had been thinking about getting a phone with web access but it's too pricey for me and too small.

Mater mentioned having one of the title, and so I've been thinking about them. What all can you do with them? Do you have to pay for any services or internet? Can you just connect to any wifi in public? Are there any good deals on these?

God bless you.

You can buy refurbished products from Apple, that could work! However you will still pay a premium price for Apple. There are tablets that are much better value, they just don't have the Apple glamor. I acquired a refurbished I-Pad for free (a gift) but I sold it to Gazelle because you can't use a jump drive with it. I am looking more for a laptop type of computer.

Tablets in general are good if you are just surfing the internet. WiFi is usually not free unless you are in a public place that offers it for free (like a book store or a coffee shop). You can also "steal" WiF if someone near your house or wherever you are is using WiFi and they haven't password protected their account. Although this is not so much stealing as sharing... without the other person knowing about it. Still questionable eh.

ETA: One of the problems sometimes with tablets is the keyboard... the I-Pad's keyboard is on-screen and I hated it. Haaaaaated it. It might be a good idea to go to a Best Buy or something just to see some tablets and how they feel in your hand before you buy anything.

I use an itouch. I love it. I don't use a phone very often, and a touch is like having an iphone without the phone part. I use wifi to use it at school, at mcdonald's, even at our starbucks next door. My husband has the 8gb, and I have the 32. I needed the bigger one because I needed 8gb just for my collection of harry potter audio books. He's got a couple of movies on his, The Right Stuff and Holy Grail. What's nice is that we can share on ours. Anything I download for mine can go on his too. We have synced calendars. Anything I put on mine shows up on his and vice versa. I used a net book at school the last two years, and figured as the semester went on that I'd need to start taking it instead, but that hasn't happened. I just use my touch. When I have to do a bunch of typing, I have a bluetooth keyboard that goes with it.

Tablets are still in the early adopter stage, so I'm seeing a lot of people who buy them, and then return them a week later. Don't buy one unless you're sure it's worth the money to you.
I would go with one of the Acer models over an iPad simply because of the price difference.

I bought my iPod Touch refurbished straight from Apple's website. It was factory refurbished and looked and worked like brand new. They have a 1-year warranty and come with a brand new battery. I believe I got the 2nd generation version with 16GB memory. It has none of the fancy stuff like a camera or other newer capabilities, but it works great for my purposes.

For the iPod Touch and iPad, you can connect anywhere there is a wi-fi signal (as long as it's unlocked). You do NOT have to pay to access internet simply for the iPod (but you do have to have a wi-fi signal). There are some providers, such as airlines and airports, who require you to pay a small fee to access their server, but usually, there are wi-fi Hot Spots like Starbucks and McDonald's where it is totally free. I love mine because I can use it when I'm traveling to listen to music, watch TV shows or movies that I've downloaded from iTunes, access the internet, look up maps or weather, etc. There are a wealth of apps on iTunes for MANY different uses. Practically anything you can think of, there is an app for that.

These are the best deals in my opinion if you want a like-new iPod Touch or iPad (factory refurbished):

The iPad is a bit different, I think, but I don't have one, so I can't tell you the specifics. I don't like the price of it and I'd never get one, especially since the iPod Touch works just fine. ;)

I see an iPad as an overgrown iPod touch. I'd love to have an iPhone, but I refuse to pay the $30/month above the phone charges to run the thing, plus, my work has wifi. So........my cell phone is old school and my iPod touch goes where I go. Really, an iPod touch -is- an iPhone without the phone.

FWIW, Verizon does have a phone with a browser and is wifi capable that does not require a data plan. I think Sharp makes it.

The Compline app on my iPod is really something else, just beautiful!

I have an iPod touch myself and my dad has an iPad. The iPad does have a 4G service thing that you would have to pay for it. If you don't opt for that you can just get WiFi and there are so many places that you can get free WiFi it is usually not a problem. I love my iPod touch since it is small enough to just fit in my pocket. I also love it for traveling since once I get WiFi I can check my e-mail on the go.

I've read good articles on why Macs are Catholic and Windows are Protestant. Except I've also read equally good articles saying the exact opposite.

To anyone in the know or experienced in this situation:

I have a phone that is very old, and works fine for talking but that's about it. I got a cooler one and then it got eaten by someone's couch, so now I'm back to my old grandma phone. I can and do text on it often, but it's a slow process. I have wanted to get an iPhone for ages and ages and ages, but I just can't really justify paying for the data package when it's not something I really *need.* It would just make my life a whole lot easier and way more fun. But newlywed college students don't have an abundance of money to spend on that kind of stuff.

Anyway, the alternative I've been considering is carrying my phone to talk AND an iTouch, in order to have the apps and texting capabilities of an iPhone without having to pay for the data package. The only investment would be in the actual iPod. I have a few friends who have done this, but I'm wondering if anyone here has, and if so, is it practical? Also, did any of you who have the glorious iPhone regret the investment it costs?

I basically do this totus tuus... it is actually kind of nice not having immediate internet access ANYWHERE I go. There are enough wi-fi spots that I can hit with my iTouch if I really need to do something on the internet. I have a feeling instant internet access would take away from more holy things for me to do with my time. For texting I still use my regular phone with t9 texing since at work I don't have wi-fi on my itouch. The fact that what I save not paying for a data plan (minimum $15) pays off the cost of a refurbished iTouch in 10 months is really what does it for me. For those who have the $25 data plan over a 2 year contract, that is $600... For that price I can go buy a new laptop every 2 years, and just stick with my itouch and regular phone.
