TheresaThoma
Totus Tuus the only reason I have any idea about this is because I work at a restaurant with a bar. So we obviously have some football fans and this was all over the sports news. Otherwise I would be right there with you.
Adrestia
Are you saying that because some people were hideously misinformed about the scandal within the Catholic Church, that now, nobody is allowed to support Paterno? There's a credible case to be made that Paterno did everything he could do. I don't necessarily agree with that, but I do agree with the larger point--which is that there almost no information about his involvement. So we really have no facts with which to condemn Paterno, besides the fact that he went to the University Police instead of the State Police. I'm going to assume the best about him until some actual facts come out that tells me otherwise. We should all be acutely aware of the dangers involved with rushing to judgment.
The fact is that the grand jury investigation went on for two years, but it was kept hush hush until Paterno broke Eddie Robinson's D1 win record. http://www.timesonline.com/columnists/sports/mark_madden/madden-sandusky-a-state-secret/article_863d3c82-5e6f-11e0-9ae5-001a4bcf6878.html This article was published in April. XIX
Paterno broke Eddie Robinson's record 2 weeks ago.
He was already the winningest coach in FBS history. Eddie Robinson coached one level down, in FCS. So his record, while impressive, was ultimately trivial in the context of Joe's football legacy. I don't know much about grand juries, but aren't they conducted in secret anyway?
Are they mentioning anything about the necessity of allowing university coaches to marry? About how celibacy drove Sandusky to commit his crime? If only he could have married and had kids... Probably not. Well, certainly they are talking about how if there were more women coaching at the university level that this would not have happened. No? No claims of a misogynist hierarchy be a contributing factor to a cover-up? Ok. They wouldn't blame the entire hierarchy, but they would certainly hold Mark Emmert, NCAA president, responsible. He had to have known, and how could he possibly turn a blind eye to all this. They say legal action should be taken against Mark. Right? Yea, probably not. But, they must giving insight into how the rules of football and the environment in which the players and the game is played led to Sandusky to do what he did, especially the idea of shower rooms. Right? Those all-knowing talking heads sure are singing a different tune this time around. We'll see what they sing if the rumor turns true about Sandusky using Second Mile as a prostitution ring of young, troubled boys for high dollar donors. Those evil 1 percenters! I knew it!
I wake up to ESPN radio every day, that all sports talk for you non-sports phatmassers. Not once did they bring up the Catholic church during their 24/7 all week Sandusky coverage. The few times that I caught Sandusky coverage on major network or local news also failed to mention anything Catholic. I was not surprised that the ESPN morning show left the churc out of it, but I was surprised that I didn't hear the comparison anywhere else. Eddie Robinson's record must have been a big deal or they wouldn't have waited until the week after Paterno broke it. Did you notice that the story I linked was posted last April? Seven months is a long time to react to a story about child rape, but I'm sure it had nothing to do with breaking the win record.

It has been proven wrong over and over, but church haters will continue their evil propoganda because they are tools of the devil. I read that his kids were adopted, for what that's worth.
