For The Girls

I started wearing makeup when I was 13 years old. My grandmother and aunt gave me some for Christmas that year and my aunt taught me how to apply it. I have NEVER been one to wear heavy makeup. I prefer the natural look. I'm constantly thinking about not wearing it, but the only thing that is holding me back is the fact that I have early onset rosacea and it makes my skin look very ruddy. I also have some scarring from previous breakouts that seem to be disappearing, fortunately, with age.

I always apply moisturizer before makeup and I make sure that I swipe my skin with an astringent soaked cotton ball before the moisturizer to make sure I don't have any oil on my skin.

I use:

L'Oreal's Visible Lift cream foundation in Soft Ivory (applied with a makeup sponge very lightly)

L'Oreal's True Match Blush in Baby Blossom (applied sparingly with a natural blush brush)

Revlon's ColorStay 12 Hr Eye Shadow in Lavender Meadow (applied with eyeshadow brushes)

CoverGirl's Professional Waterproof Mascara in Very Black
I used to go to sleep with my makeup on because I was too lazy to wash it off, but now I wash it off as soon as I come home and know I'm going to be at home for the rest of the day because my face starts to itch.

I use Disney Natural's Fragrance Free Baby Wash for washing my face or I use a Sensitive Skin Baby Wipe. I used to use Oil of Olay's Sensitive Skin Makeup Removing Wipes, but they are hard to find. As for the astringent, I use the generic version of SeaBreeze Sensitive Skin from Wal-Mart. I also apply L'Oreal's Collagen Moisturizing Cream before applying makeup (my mom turned me on to that stuff even though I'm not experiencing wrinkles yet; I love it because it's not greasy or waxy).

It took me several years of experimenting to find the right stuff that doesn't break my skin out. I do not touch my skin to apply makeup or moisturizer or it causes breakouts. I cannot use any face products (besides mascara) by CoverGirl or Neutrogena or I get zits and raw skin. I don't use concealer because it makes my skin look cakey. Maybelline is just a waste of money because it doesn't last a long time. Almay and Physician's Formula are WAY overpriced. L'Oreal and Revlon are my go-to brands. :)

better yet - dont wear any. God made you without all that gunk on yer face. Just revel in the beauty He has made.

Groo, let's not split hairs over this issue. The Church has never stated that it is a sin to wear makeup. Some women, like me, have to wear it because of problems with rosacea or zits. If women want to go natural, that's their preference, but it shouldn't be a forced issue.

Sorry, I must have misread your post. I was on a different forum not too long ago and there was someone there that was trying to guilt trip every girl who wanted to wear makeup. It really bothered me. It almost encouraged scrupulosity in myself, so I wondered about the other girls. I didn't mean to come down on you like I did. it's just an issue that really bugs me. I don't like wearing makeup, but it has become a necessity. I'm slowly working on being au naturale. ;)

Let your makeup bring out the best in you, not cover up the best in you or create a "new" you. Keep it as natural as possible. Otherwise, you can get in a rough habit of wearing too much makeup, which is awful for so many reasons. One-your skin will hate you and two- your self confidence in your natural beauty will probably go down. Personal example: I think my best feature are my eyes. Since they're blue, I wear brownish-gold eye shadow to make them stand out. Almay has different color kits for different color eyes. Less really is more- you only need a little eye makeup to do the trick.

For skin- be easy. My skin is REALLY sensitive and I used to have baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad acne. I'd wear a lot of liquid foundation and coverup, which probably made the acne worse. Get a good moisturizer. If you need to, get a coverup stick for problem areas, and stick with a light powder for your face. As far as anything goes with skin, hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic are the best, even if you don't have sensitive skin. Also, don't use blush unless you're really pale and it would look natural on you. I'm very pale BUT I refuse to wear blush, just because my skin gets pink when I laugh and exercise anyways. Also, I kinda like pale skin. lol.

For lips- start off with gloss. If you're going to wear lipstick, keep it a natural shade and wear less eye makeup so you don't look like a clown with gunk on your eyes AND your lips.

It's gonna take time and experimentation to realize what is best for you, so good luck!

Don't use liquids!!! I use a little powder cover up most days and a little lite pink lip gloss. Our young skin doesn't need a lot to look completely amazing. :)

One thing I always say is if you can possibly afford it don't wear drug store makeup. If you buy a $10 foundation you will get $10 results! Okay in a pinch but if you are going to spend money on makeup why not save up a little more and get something high quality. The drugstore brands almost always have harsh filler chemicals in them.

Also, only wear mineral makeup. Liquid makeup can be very bad for the skin and some of ingredients are carcinogens (granted you're not sprinkling this stuff in your salad... but still). If you google "organic mineral makeup" you'll get some good ideas.

Blush can be hard to get right but NARS makes it relatively easy. $27 is a lot for a blush but a little goes a long way and it is does the job perfectly. I still have one of the compacts from about a year ago, still going strong. No clown effect. The best two colors are the ones called Sin and the one that starts with an O and ends with an M. I won't type the full name on this phorum but you'll know which one it is when you look at their color list. It would be great if they would name their blushes with more modesty. But they do work.

Ok thanks everybody! So here's what I was thinking - mineral powder, lip gloss, and eye liner/mascara if I can not blind myself, maybe a teensy bit of eye shadow for nicer occasions like going to Mass on Sunday?

Here's a problem I have though - my skin tends to be dry from washing it, but if I put moisturizer on it I break out. Same if I don't wash it. What do I do?

Sounds good.

Have you tried just using less face lotion? Or watering it down in your hand a bit first?

Try out different moisturizers, or put on lotion in less amounts less times a day. If you put it on twice a day, change it to just once. That's what I've had to do. For moisturizers, look at cetaphil and CeraVe. they're really gently and light.

The easiest thing i have found that works on my skin is the purminerals line. Its sooooooo easy, and it works like Bare minerals but its cheaper. I get the 4 in 1 compact which is concealer, powder, foundation, and moisturizer all in one. It really evens out the skin and looks very natural, just be sure you get the right color for your skin tone. I add a little mascara to bring out my eyes and sometimes (not often though) some very light eyeshadow. I'm 17, and i dont usually wear makeup all the time, and if i do i want to look as natural as possible because girls our age dont need to cake our faces up with makeup. But i agree with Red, whether you wear makeup or not, always wash your face at night and in the morning. I find pur minerals at Ulta, and its about 30 dollars. I hope this helps, and go natural every now and then. With this makeup i use, people honestly cant tell the difference of when i wear it and when i dont, except with the mascara.
