Over 35 And Discerning?

Recommended Posts

Age is an issue we hit very often once your over 30 or 35 in my case, so what I'd like to do is list the orders that clearly are open to discerner's over 30-35 and talk about discerning experiences for those of us in the 'older' bracket.

So starting with what I know being an Aussie and who I've had contact with-

Tyburn, no age limit- http://www.tyburnconvent.org.uk/home/index.html

Benedictine Nuns at Jamberoo, no age limit- http://www.jamberooabbey.org.au/html/home.htm

The Redemptoristines in Australia have no age limit either but are not online. I can PM a postal address if anyone wants it.

I also know that the Australian Passionist's Fathers are looking for women who maybe interesting in being part of a foundation so there can be a Passionist contemplative community here. If your interested PM me and I'll pass the email of the vocation contact on to you.

Overseas

Over to you! :smile2:

I love looking up communities. I'll add some, definitely! My first would have to be the order that my friend joined last month:

Benedictine Sisters of Our Lady of Grace and Compassion in Brighton, England, UK

She is 52 years old and they accepted her without hesitation. She also has an autoimmune disorder and was accepted in spite of that! :)

"My" Sisters -- the Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma, MI -- have been known to accept women in their early 50s.

On the whole, UK orders accept women up to at least 40, and many far older than that (there are a few exceptions, St cecilia's is 35 I think). They also seem to be open to those with well controlled, medicated, medical conditions, possibly in part due to the NHS - my severe allergies and asthma have never been a problem with any community I have contacted, as they are very well controlled and the only 'problem' would be if it deteriated whilst in community.

Actually, over here it would be harder to be accepted under 24ish than over 35 I think.

I know this is "off topic" but I'm rather concerned about my friend. Her lupus flared up over a week ago (almost 2 weeks ago) and I haven't heard from her since she told me. I hope they don't send her away because of the flare-up. She has only been in the community for 5 or 6 weeks. :(

Oh bless her. I would imagine they would wait a little longer and hope it settles - the first few weeks of postulancy are a shock to the system. I will pray she stabilises soon.

Yeah, that's what my mom told me -- that lupus can flare up with stress. I thank you for your prayers. I hope she didn't have to be admitted to the hospital and that she is feeling better. I am going to send her a follow up email to check her condition.

I hope I am in Religious life before my 30s. If I decide I do want to go to Grad school, I don't know how old I'll be. And there's no telling how old I'll be when I get out of this school

The visitation order accepts older women and widowers. They also accept people with physical disabilities.
Toledo and Tyringham aren't taking older and sticking to their age limits 45 or 50. I know several women over these ages they turned away. I know that Toledo does have a slew of older novices (60s, 70s) and 2 young ones.
