As I have to wait too I've been looking for a ring. I want something discreet and something that reflects who I am. I love the line from the Bible 'I am my Beloved's and my Beloved's is mine' from Song of Songs. What do you think? Its not cheap but similar rings in the UK which aren't as nice cost as much even with shipping included. I'll probably get it in silver but I might save up for the gold one.

Well, it works out at £50 sterling, including postage. The rings I looked at on a UK site are £50 and not as nice so... I'm going to find out how much it would be to get one made for me over here as there's lots of jewelers.

Getting married to Christ! It's worth it if it's expensive!

I say this with love but....

I think you've been watching too much reality TV. ;) If you want a $3,000 wedding dress you'll have to marry in the world I'm afraid!

I probably won't need a wedding dress but if I did join an order where they had it I'd borrow my best friend's

Actually, no, I wouldn't. Personally, I'm not one of those who thinks you have a vocation to religious life. I am happy to be proven wrong as I love religious life myself, but from what you have posted on pm, I don't see any signs of a true vocation. First of all, there is no affinity or attraction to the life, which to me, is a prerequisite. But the other two signs are acceptance and ability, so I will reserve judgment until you have made a real choice. Right now, you don't have a boyfriend so you can't get married, and you haven't applied to enter anywhere so it isn't decision time yet. I think you are curious about the life, and that is understandable considering the many women on here who post about it all the time, and since many of your pm phriends are thinking about it, I'm not surprised you decided to go to a vocation retreat.

After you come back from that retreat, we will be better able to see what you actually feel about religious life. I do hope you give the retreat some serious consideration and not just joke through the whole time though. I love your sense of humour, and appreciate that you want to keep things light - just don't forget that for the nuns, this is their whole life and they take it seriously.

If you do get married instead, I hope your husband has a great sense of humour too! :) God does (He made us right?) so I'm sure you make Him laugh.

PS - edit - And I do hope no one misunderstands what I said about nuns taking this seriously. Of course they laugh too and will love Mon's sense of humour - I didn't mean that - just that sometimes we have to stop the jokes and really think about things seriously too.

You are absolutely right about the importance of taking it serious. I have met several young women on the vocation retreats I have been on who think that this is just a vacation and not a serious test of what God might be calling them to. There are some that I have met that I don't believe should be discerning at their particular place and time (in fact, if I were judging my past, I probably shouldn't have been discerning so soon after my reversion). I would never say it to their face because I am not God and I don't know what He is calling them to do (and I may be totally 100% wrong!), so I just commend them to Him in my prayers.

I will be honest that I think some orders have TOO many young women come all at once. Some don't give long enough of a weekend to really gauge what the life is all about. I think that it is very important to really think this through. It is a serious life commitment. You are not going in there to just try out the life and play around. I know there is that flexibility of being able to leave if it honestly doesn't work out, but people should never take it lightly. Religious life is HARD! You have to go in there with the intention of staying for life! :)

Hi, Lil'Monster,

If and when the right 'Guy' shows up (and I am leaving that open as to whether it is the Lord or a human!), if you still want a camo wedding dress, here you go:

http://camoformal.co...hp/wedding.html

Chickens are smart - if you start now, you can train them to carry your train or your bouquet or something! :)

On a more serious note, just like Nunsense, I don't know if you have a vocation or not... and I can understand where Nunsense and MaterMisericordiae are coming from. It certainly isn't something to be afraid of discerning.

However, I've known some people who have very strong vocations who are a little scared of the idea, and hide behind a humorous fence. If God is calling, you will know it deep inside of you, and you will know it feels right at some point... right enough to let go of that fence. (kind of like a chick finally willing to venture out into the warm sunshine).

I agree going on a discernment retreat is a serious thing... and it may help you to either scratch that itch about 'I wonder if... no, couldn't be!' and get it to stop.... or help you to see if it really is God trying to talk to you. Either response is fine. It just needs to come from your whole heart and soul. That is what a discernment retreat is for - a time to let go of the presuppositions and see what God wants... and what you are willing to give. God will love you for giving Him that time.

When I was in school, the Sisters told me that they had been a little startled (and unsure what to do!) when a woman who had recently been married asked if she could come on one of their discernment retreats. When they asked her why she wanted to go, she said she hadn't been able to get rid a feeling that she might have been called by God, and wanted to let God know she was open to whatever God wanted. At the end of the retreat she thanked them and told them how TRULY grateful she was that she had attended the retreat... but now she knew she was in the right place. She knew that she had not been mistaken going into marriage, and that God's will for her really was for her to be with her husband .... and have a ton of kids, God willing. At the time I was really shocked that they let her attend--but over the years I have marveled at the generosity of that woman -- and her husband! -- to let her do that final bit of discerning.

So.... go enjoy the time with our Lord and the chance to find out what religious life is. If you are called, you'll know it..... and we will pray for you!
