Byzantine
Hello everyone. I will be attending FUS in Fall 2012. I'm majoring in theology while including enough philosophy for seminary entrance. Anyone got any advice on a second major? I'm thinking of multimedia, writing, classics, or maybe a modern language. Modern languages, however, are difficult to choose because: 1. Spanish would help me when I got sent to TX (young Byzantine priests under Pittsburgh's jurisdiction getting sent to TX are a when, not an if; but I think I might be able to teach myself practical Spanish), 2. A lot of Orthodox stuff comes from France, and 3. The Germans do a lot of scholarly work as well, and I'm planning to study in Austria. I'm hoping to get into the Honors Program, and I'll be coming in with an AP Lit & Comp Score of 5 and hopefully 3 credits from LaRoche in humanities (I think). So, guys, anyone care to lend a hand? Any and all advice will help

regina_coeli
Spanish. It is useful throughout the US and so few of us are bi lingual.
Byzantine
That one interests me and would certainly be useful, but I taught myself a lot of Latin after my first year of it in high school and I have a year of high school Spanish as well, so it would probably be within my grasp to teach myself enough Spanish to get along, maybe even more than that if I had the time. And if I seem like I'm just shooting down ideas, I don't mean to. I'm just trying to toss around different ideas and develop my thoughts.
LaPetiteSoeur
Foreign languages. Spanish is a good language, but any romance language is good. If you know one romance language, another is REALLY easy to learn. If you can, take a class on poverty/social issues. It will help immensely in your ministry if you enter the seminary. Ethics is also a fantastic class to take. And another note: make the most of your time at school. Take classes that interest you. Get involved. Meet and talk to your professors and get to know them. Enjoy your time at school. Good luck next year!
Byzantine
Quoting LPS, but with quotability of this thing theoretically enabled: Foreign languages. Spanish is a good language, but any romance language is good. If you know one romance language, another is REALLY easy to learn. Again, there's a good chance that, given a textbook, I could teach myself Spanish. I don't know about French or German, though. Maybe just learning the language classes (like what was euphemistically called "learning to make the noises" by our seminary's former Slavonic teacher, but somewhat more in-depth )? I'd like proficiency/being able to function, not necessarily fluency. If you can, take a class on poverty/social issues. It will help immensely in your ministry if you enter the seminary. Ethics is also a fantastic class to take. Doesn't high school level count? And the ethics would be part of my philosophy for seminary, I think. And another note: make the most of your time at school. Take classes that interest you. Get involved. Meet and talk to your professors and get to know them. Enjoy your time at school. Too much I want to do... Good luck next year! Thanks! End quote with quoting theoretically enabled. Hmm... thanks to you guys, I have so far realized that I don't think I actually want a major in a foreign language, but rater enough basic classes that I can function and further my knowledge on my own time. So the choice seems to be English with Writing concentration or Communications with Multimedia Concentration... Unless someone wants to make a case for something else? MissyP89
You can take language classes without being a language major. The beauty of college is that you can often use electives to round out your schedule so you get a bit of everything. I'd encourage multimedia, but again, I'm biased because I have a degree and work in that field. But here's what I think: if you're going into ministry, you're going to need to communicate effectively with people both within and outside your church. And there's no better way to do that today than online. It also shows people that you're connected and aware of what's going on in the public sphere, which is also vitally important as a priest At the very least, it'll help you build a better website than 98% of the parishes I've seen that look like they were developed in 1985. Even if you don't go into ministry, media work is incredibly fun. You meet so many different people and learn new things every day. And let's be honest: it's just really razzle dazzle to play with audio and video.
BG45
Going into ministry, I won't recommend my major to you like everyone likes to in this thread. Of the options presented, I'd suggest doing comm/media or Spanish, both would be intensely useful. Perhaps Psychology also; every parish has that one member that it would be useful with. One of the major reasons I'm thinking multimedia is because I'm in charge of the control room at school. Before that I trained as audio mixer and then became video mixer. Now I just let a certain sophomore make me look incredibly smart (for which I'm very grateful).

Going into ministry, I won't recommend my major to you like everyone likes to in this thread. BG45
Hope you like what you end up choosing Though if you do end up teaching yourself Spanish and run into snags and it would mess with your schedule to take some classes...you could always *glances around to make sure no one from the Registrar's office is around* use Rosetta Stone. I dunno what Steubie charges per credit, but with what they charge per credit here, it would actually be cheaper to buy the $400 software.

BG45
Feel free to suggest a cheaper alternative? I wasn't a big fan the time I tried someone's and it was all "Hi you are immersed now", but it's the only program I really knew for that sort of thing with a decent success rate lol. missionseeker
I think anything is better. Cheaper programs off amazon are how I'm gonna go. Like 10 times cheaper. or more.
regina_coeli
One of the most important things about college is considering all the options available. B already has an A in critical thinking!
