Prayer Rule...

Byzantine

Recommended Posts

I need advice. I've been feeling pretty... blah lately regarding my prayer rule. Is it time to ask my priest about a new one or should I try to fight through this or should I ask him what would be best or what? Thanks!

Maximilianus

I googled, got a bunch of Orthodox hits, so now I know why I don't know what it is, seeing as I be Roman. So it is on the OP to esplain himself more often, not all of us are savy to the Eastern ways.

Prayer rule = daily prayer assigned to an individual Christian. Varies depending on a number of factors.

"For mental prayer in my opinion is nothing else than an intimate sharing between friends; it means taking time frequently to be alone with him who we know loves us. The important thing is not to think much but to love much and so do that which best stirs you to love. Love is not great delight but desire to please God in everything." St Teresa de Jesus

Thats my prayer rule :P

It seems to me that this mindset is not present in Byzantine spirituality.

It depends what you mean when you say you feel blah. All of us experience times when prayer feels unsatisfying, but that doesn't mean that the prayer isn't good on some far deeper and purer level. At the basis of all prayer should be the quiet conviction that the kingdom of heaven is within you. No invitation to Him goes unanswered; He is with you and at work in you even when you don't feel it. Personally I think it is a bad idea to alter your prayer life when you hit a dry spell, as then you might start doing whatever makes you feel best intellectually or emotionally, and never learn how to live with anything other than comfort. As a general rule, the dry times are when I persevere in what I'm doing (or try to), and the times when I feel enriched and blessed are the times when I may embrace something new.

But that is me and my way. I think the best thing for you would be to ask your priest for some guidance, in case your rule does need to be changed. It is hard for us to judge that based on what you've written here, especially as we don't know you in the way that your priest does.
