The First Time You Saw A Nun/sister

I know others have shared their stories in other threads but I thought a thread just for this subject might be nice.

The first time I saw a habited Sister was in a very busy train station. I was in my early 20s, not going to Church at the time (lapsed) not thinking about God, and she passed in front of me. White modified habit but whatever, it didnt matter, seeing her stopped me dead in my tracks which wasnt a very good idea considering how busy the place was lol  Seeing her instantly drew my thoughts to Church etc. While my life didnt change drastically from that, seeing her did help.

First time I saw nun in a traditional full habit was three Carmelites waiting for me when I got off a plane!!!!!! I WANTED TO RUN AWAY!!!

First time I saw a Dominican Sister was as she was walking away in an airport. The second time was in Ann Arbor with DS when she was like "ok we are going to turn this corner and you are going to see a lot of Dominicans." We turned the corner, the lobby of the church was packed with them and guess what? I WANTED TO RUN AWAY!!!! :hehe: There was no way DS would have let me run though because she would have hunted me down and dragged my carcass back into the church, so we went in and were caught up in a swirl of white.

My first experience of nuns were the Adrian Dominicans back in the 50's as teachers in St. Monica Parish near St. Augustine, FL. I was so excited that I went door to door offering assistance for change so that I could buy them a box of Russell Stover chocolates Back then they were all fully habited. I was so infatuated with them that I never played the normal gmes but would always wear a white sheet and pretend to be a nun.

I was 15 and attending a Steubenville Youth Conference. We were walking to the main auditorium when I saw three Carmelite Sisters and asked my YM if they were nuns. She told me to go talk to them, but I was afraid, and refused. She grabbed me by the arm and dragged me over to say hello. :hehe2: They remembered me two years later when I saw them again at the same conference.

The second time I met religious, I was a counselor (age 16) at my diocesan Vocations camp for young girls. We (the counselors) were staying at a cabin a day early for training, and the Nashville Dominicans were to arrive that night. We were swimming all afternoon, but their expected arrival time came and went. I was so excited that I kept going to the end of the driveway, dripping wet in my swim-suit, looking for them. They eventually did arrive, and I didn't quite make a fool of myself. :smile3:

Older me is very much amused at younger me.

I have been told that I met a Missionary of Charity when I was about 6 or 7. She was the sister of someone who worked at the hostel my parents ran, and for some reason was home and staying with her for a few weeks. Strangely, I have no recollection of it even though I have far earlier memories of things that I would have considered less memorable!

I think my next encounter with a religious sister was once I was in my 20s, we had 3 convents in my old parish and the sisters were always about. The first nun (ie cloistered) was when I first visited Q! It was the lovely Sr Rachel who met me at the door, took me to drop my things off and then to eat, but never introduced herself and I had had no correspondance with her, only the then prioress. Very surreal experience!

I have been surrounded by Sisters since I was 5. My principal had been a Sister (not the same Sister) throughout grade school and high school too. I was also taught by a few Sisters as well. Needless to say the Fillippini Sisters were not an influence on my Vocation. The influence came later on.

I don't remember how old I was, but it was before the age of reason. Salesians ran the Religious education at my parish. They were amesome women, young, vibrant and holy. They wore their habits from their heads down to their feet. I remember attending the many devotionals that the parish used to have while they were there. Masses on Saturday mornings were coordinated by them. They would gather all of us children by the entrance and we would process with flowers in hand (most of them from the Sisters' own garden.) We would put the flowers at the feet of the Virgin and the priests would then begin the Mass.) I remember getting a little ribbon with a medal on it from Sr. Trinidad. It was a medal of St. John Bosco.

Now, if you ask me when was the first time i saw a nun/sister without a habit, I was 7, and I was totally in shock. I remember feeling quite confused and very sad and wondering if there was something happening to my beloved Church... (she wasn't a salesian, btw...)

I was about ten years and old and still a Baptist. I was at Disney World. They were in full traditional habits and in line to ride the tea cups.

My entire family couldn't help but laugh, because c'mon! You do not expect a full habit + tea cups at Disney!

I saw sisters at Disney Land! They watched my Band perform, and, when they noticed me distractedly staring/grinning at them, they waved. I later saw them screaming on a roller coaster. I was amused.

My first encounter is one that I don't quite remember. I went to a Catholic hospital to donate money and the people in charge of the donations happened to be the Daughters of Charity. When I told my mom that I don't remember them, she showed me pictures of what they look like. She also said that there were some non-habited Sisters that used to go to one of the Churches we sometimes went to when I was a kid.

My first REAL encounter was with the Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal and the Sisters of Life. I'll never forget that because it is what prompted me to investigate a possible call to religious life myself. I can't wait to see them again! :)

This is the first Sister I saw but long before I saw her! This is my grand auntie Sarah, Sr. Mary Benedict. My mother took this pic with a BOX CAMERA - most people on VS are probably young enough not even to know what that is! - in the convent garden in Redhill, Surrey. Sr. Benedict was a Sister of La Retraite (they're still around but not quite recognizable anymore.)

If this was the only reason to enter into Religious Life, I would go for the Felicians right away!!!!!!!

I don't remember the first time I saw a nun... they have always just been around. But the first time I MET a nun was about seven years ago. It was a little sister of the poor... I have been volunteering with they ever since. :)
