How Do You Deal With People And Kids?

Hello,

I tend to get shy around strangers and I'm rather naive in dealing with people in odd circumstances. I was also homeschooled and didn't learn the ins and outs of the ways people act.

Recently, I was looking at DVD's at the library, and a woman starts poking around at the videos in front of me, ignoring I'm there. After some clearing of my throat, I think she took the hint.

Then soon after, her two year old (or so) starts running around and doddling with the videos I'm looking at. How do you deal with that when it's not your kid? Later I thought to maybe say "Hey little guy, can you please play over there? I'm looking here." But, I'm not experienced with kids at all.

What about when the person next to you starts staring at your computer screen?

That sounds good to me..or "Can I look at those for a little bit?", or "Wanna share them with me?" or something... If the kid gives you grief, find the parental.

A simple "can I help you with something?" works for me

People normally ignore me.

Very good advice! :smile2:

Usually people steer clear, but it seems like the past few weeks, people are often doing something. My anxiety probably intensifies it.

Ignore them; if they get too close/in your way, make eye contact. If they don't take the hint, say something polite to discourage them from being around you. If they continue to bother/annoy you...walk away.

Anxiety can make dealing with people seem even more stressful. It really does make things seem more difficult than they really are. I remember when I was first diagnosed with agoraphobia (social anxiety) at 16 and I felt like everyone was staring at me. There was one classroom in college that had all the student desks up against the wall so everyone was facing each other (which was so goofy). It made me really paranoid like people could read my thoughts and were judging me.

When it seems to get out of hand, just step back and take some deep breaths. :)
